stands for the Positivist&#8217;s judgment.&nbsp;&nbsp;The subscript &#8220;e&#8221; signifies the empirio-schematic judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0089 Let me first consider&nbsp;<em>potential<sub>1p<\/sub>&nbsp;for the Positivist&#8217;s judgment<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;should be&nbsp;<em>the literary text<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The triumphalist scientist<\/em>&nbsp;proposes to substitute&nbsp;<em>a successful model<\/em>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<em>the noumenon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then,&nbsp;<em>the model substituting for the noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;[can be objectified by]&nbsp;<em>its phenomena<sub>1p<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0090 Now, I turn to&nbsp;<em>the empirio-schematic judgment<sub>2p<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;for the Literary Positivist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The terminology is most difficult, because both &#8220;formalism&#8221; and &#8220;structuralism&#8221; denote&nbsp;<em>models that are &#8220;not religious&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em>(fitting the mandate of &#8220;no metaphysics&#8221;), yet implicitly evoke&nbsp;<em>formal and final causations<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0091 After all, &#8220;structuralism&#8221; is &#8220;semiology [substantiating] aesthetics&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;So the disciplinary language of structuralism<sub>3e<\/sub>, while sounding &#8220;not metaphysical&#8221;, contextualizes&nbsp;<em>dyadic relations<sub>2e<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(and&nbsp;<em>triadic relations disguised as dyadic relations<\/em>) that are naturally (and for humans, instinctively,) contained in&nbsp;<em>category-based nested forms<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0092 So, how does &#8220;structuralism&#8221; as part of a disciplinary language<sub>3e<\/sub>&nbsp;operate on the possibility of &#8216;observations of phenomena within a text&#8217;<sub>1e<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Structuralism<\/em>&nbsp;situates&nbsp;<em>semiology<\/em>&nbsp;in terms of&nbsp;<em>the aesthetics of systems<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;If semiology is the study of spoken language, where &#8220;spoken language&#8221; consists of two arbitrarily related systems of differences,&nbsp;<em>parole<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>langue,<\/em>&nbsp;then&nbsp;<em>each habitual association between one parole and one langue<\/em>&nbsp;(or &#8220;sign&#8221;) must be situated by&nbsp;<em>a structure or a system.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0093 Consequently, the structure<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;is a normal context<sub>3<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Its potential<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;is &#8216;the laws of a system&#8217;<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a dyadic structure that takes semiological matter into a form that emerges from<\/em>&nbsp;(and situates)&nbsp;<em>that potential<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A structuralist model<sub>2e<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(<em>what ought to be,&nbsp;<\/em>secondness) within an unfolded empirio-schematic judgment<sub>2p<\/sub>&nbsp;manifests all four of Aristotle&#8217;s causalities (material, formal, efficient and final).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0094 Yes, that is well and fine, but I still do not have a diagram of&nbsp;<em>what goes into a structuralist model<sub>2e<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is because there is&nbsp;<em>something about the structuralist model<sub>2e<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;to keep in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0095 If one follows triumphalist scientists, then&nbsp;<em>this model of the text<sub>2e<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;may serve as&nbsp;<em>a substitute for the text itself<sub>1p<\/sub>.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;That is,&nbsp;<em>the model of the text<sub>2e<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(<em>what ought to be,<\/em>&nbsp;secondness) may re-present&nbsp;<em>the noumenon<sub>1p<\/sub>&nbsp;in the Positivist&#8217;s judgment<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>what is,<\/em>&nbsp;firstness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all,&nbsp;<em>the model<sub>2e<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;in its empirio-schematic reality<sub>2p<\/sub>, encompasses&nbsp;<em>the phenomena of the literary text<sub>1p<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0096&nbsp;<em>The following figure<\/em>&nbsp;color-codes&nbsp;<em>that message<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide25.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide25.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide25.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide25-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0097 In section three (3), the authors distinguish two schools of formalism in Russia: The Society for the Study of Poetic Language (in St. Petersburg) and the Moscow Linguistic Circle (MLC, with Jakobson as president).&nbsp;&nbsp;The two branches aim to adhere to the Positivist&#8217;s judgment, with&nbsp;<em>the literary text<\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>the thing itself<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marxist or Freudian or communication-based reductionist paradigms are discouraged.&nbsp;&nbsp;Holistic approaches are encouraged.&nbsp;&nbsp;Formalist and finalist models cannot be fragmented into merely mechanical processes, acting as truncated material and efficient causalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0098 Do the terms, &#8220;formalist&#8221; and &#8220;finalist&#8221; have anything to do with&nbsp;<em>the most metaphysical of Aristotle&#8217;s four causes?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0099 So, I wonder, &#8220;Can one satisfy the positivist&#8217;s rule by building models that explicitly use&nbsp;<em>mechanical and efficient terminology<\/em>&nbsp;while implicitly recruiting&nbsp;<em>formal and final causalities?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hmmm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did I already answer that question?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0100 Section three (3) reports that Juri Lotman (many years later), in his&nbsp;<em>Lectures on Structural Poetics<\/em>&nbsp;(appearing in the first issue of&nbsp;<em>Sign Systems Studies,<\/em>&nbsp;published in 1964), criticizes previous so-called &#8220;formal methods&#8221; that focused on&nbsp;<em>the matter of language<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the form of the literary text<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Formalists&#8221; discern&nbsp;<em>various literary devices<\/em>&nbsp;in the text.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>These devices<\/em>&nbsp;work&nbsp;<em>in a mechanical fashion<\/em>&nbsp;and are not &#8220;structuralist&#8221;, in so far as they do not elucidate interdependent and hierarchical wholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0101 As far as I can see, during the first transit (1910s-1930s), academics in linguistics and literature widen&nbsp;<em>their focus of inquiry<\/em>&nbsp;to include two contemporaneous European trends, logical positivism (the interests of the Vienna Circle) and phenomenology (the return to the &#8220;noumenon&#8221; proposed by Edmund Husserl).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within these European trends, a subtle replacement is both encouraged (by the logical positivists) and challenged (by the phenomenologists).&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Noumena,<\/em>&nbsp;which cannot be objectified by their phenomena, are increasingly veiled by&nbsp;<em>successful models,<\/em>&nbsp;which can be objectified by their phenomena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0102 But, disagreement mounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Logical positivists (or &#8220;triumphalist scientists&#8221;) want to replace each noumenon with its mechanical or mathematical model.&nbsp;&nbsp;This gives birth to the academic laboratory sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phenomenologists rely on a method, devised by Husserl, to figure out&nbsp;<em>what the noumenon must be<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This path supports further observations and measurements of phenomena that objectify&nbsp;<em>what the noumenon must be<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This fuels&nbsp;<em>the social and psychological sciences<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0103 As far as I can see, literature studies and linguistics are more akin to biology (where phenomenology seems more relevant) than chemistry and physics (where triumphalist scientists are hard to dismiss).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, my opinion does not stand in the way of triumphalist science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0104 So, let me take a closer look at this structuralist model<sub>2e<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide26.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide26.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide26.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide26-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0105 While scientists and intellectuals in the West snip formal and final causalities away from their material and efficient causalities, the linguistic circles in&nbsp;<em>what becomes the Soviet empire<\/em>&nbsp;unwittingly embrace Aristotle&#8217;s trickery.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The structuralist model<sub>2e<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;contextualizes&nbsp;<em>a lower-level category-based nested form.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0106 On the upper line, the empirio-schematic unfolds into a nested form.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The triadic normal context of the language of formalism<\/em>&nbsp;(where &#8220;formal&#8221;
