called the &#8220;Umwelt&#8221; for animals and &#8220;Lebenswelt&#8221; for humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0036 Later, Saussure&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>Course on Linguistics<\/em>&nbsp;shocks&nbsp;<em>the field of linguistics<\/em>&nbsp;by proposing&nbsp;<em>a scientific definition of language<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Spoken language consists of two arbitrarily related systems of differences,&nbsp;<em>parole&nbsp;<\/em>(or speech talk) and&nbsp;<em>langue<\/em>&nbsp;(what goes on in one&#8217;s head in order to decode and encode speech talk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0037 So, what is a spoken word?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A spoken word<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a placeholder in two (arbitrarily related) systems of differences<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saussure reveals&nbsp;<em>a structure to language<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can depict that structure as a hylomorphe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This hylomorphe may then go into&nbsp;<em>academic matter<\/em>&nbsp;that substantiates&nbsp;<em>a modern discipline of aesthetics or &#8220;art appreciation&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9847\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide11.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide11-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0038 For the hylomorphe depicted above,&nbsp;<em>parole<\/em>&nbsp;is like matter and&nbsp;<em>langue<\/em>&nbsp;is like form.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The study of the structure of the spoken word<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>semiology<\/em>) serves as&nbsp;<em>matter<\/em>&nbsp;that substantiates&nbsp;<em>the form of the discipline of aesthetics<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0039 So, what am I suggesting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is semiology all that different from formalism?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both are academic ways of thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, is &#8220;aesthetics&#8221;
