Peirce, a sign is a triadic relation.&nbsp;&nbsp;A sign-vehicle stands for a sign-object in regards to a sign-interpretant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peirce dies in 1914.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Ferdinand de Saussure, a sign is a dyad, composed of a signifier and a signified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saussure dies in 1913.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0011 May I now weave&nbsp;<em>the two definitions of sign<\/em>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<em>Peirce&#8217;s category of secondness,<\/em>&nbsp;the realm of actuality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0012 According to Peirce,&nbsp;<em>all existence<\/em>&nbsp;comports with&nbsp;<em>three categories<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0013&nbsp;<em>Firstness,<\/em>&nbsp;the monadic realm of possibility, contains only one element.&nbsp;&nbsp;That element may be simple or complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0014&nbsp;<em>Secondness,<\/em>&nbsp;the dyadic realm of actuality, contains two contiguous real elements.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For notation, I place the contiguity in brackets, rendering secondness as the dyad, {one real element [contiguity] other real element}.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe<\/em>&nbsp;serves as an example. The two real elements are matter and form.&nbsp;&nbsp;The contiguity is &#8220;substance&#8221;, yielding the hylomorphe, {matter [substance] form}.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Saussure&#8217;s characterization of sign<\/em>&nbsp;accords to secondness, in so far as both the signifier and the signified are real elements.&nbsp;&nbsp;The contiguity, however, is missing. Perhaps, the contiguity is &#8220;arbitrary relation&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, for the moment, I will leave the contiguity as a blank. For now, Saussure&#8217;s hylomorphe is the dyad, {signifier [contiguity] signified}.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here, the signifier is like matter and the signified is like form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide03.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide03-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Uh-oh.&nbsp;&nbsp;What are the technical terms,&nbsp;<em>&#8220;parole&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;and &#8220;<em>langue&#8221;,<\/em>&nbsp;doing there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, isn&#8217;t&nbsp;<em>parole<\/em>&nbsp;more like&nbsp;<em>form<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>langue<\/em>&nbsp;more like&nbsp;<em>matter?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hmmm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Dyadic actualities<\/em>&nbsp;include&nbsp;<em>the topics that science investigates<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Saussure&#8217;s semiology<\/em>&nbsp;is considered to be&nbsp;<em>scientific<\/em>&nbsp;(more or less).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0015&nbsp;<em>Thirdness,<\/em>&nbsp;the triadic realm of normal contexts, mediations, signs, judgments and so forth, contains three elements, one from each category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sign-vehicle stands for a sign-object in regards to a sign-interpretant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peirce&#8217;s sign relation is paradigmatic, except for one rather unexpected twist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The sign-interpretant<\/em>&nbsp;belongs to thirdness.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both&nbsp;<em>the sign-vehicle<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>sign-object<\/em>&nbsp;belong to secondness, the realm of actuality.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, what is left to associate with firstness?&nbsp;&nbsp;The only words that are not accounted for are &#8220;stands for&#8221; and &#8220;in regards&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Stands for&#8221; can be classified as a possibility &#8220;in regards&#8221; to a sign-interpretant.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, &#8220;stands for&#8221; may be&nbsp;<em>an aspect of the sign-interpretant that belongs to firstness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So,&nbsp;<em>the sign-interpretant<\/em>&nbsp;belongs to both thirdness and firstness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0016 If that makes any sense, please take note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sign-vehicle (in secondness) stands for a sign-object (in secondness) in regards to a sign-interpretant (in both thirdness and firstness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course,&nbsp;<em>the sign<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a triadic relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, can&nbsp;<em>the sign<\/em>&nbsp;also be depicted as&nbsp;<em>a dyadic actuality?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0017&nbsp;<em>What I am about to do<\/em>&nbsp;may be considered&nbsp;<em>a travesty<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The sign-vehicle<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the sign-object<\/em>&nbsp;may be considered&nbsp;<em>real elements<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;So,&nbsp;<em>the contiguity<\/em>&nbsp;must include&nbsp;<em>the sign-interpretant, &#8220;in regards to&#8221; and &#8220;stands for&#8221;.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Stands for&#8221; goes with the realm of possibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;In regards to&#8221; goes with the realm of normal contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0018 May I say that in terms of Peirce&#8217;s categories?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two real elements,&nbsp;<em>the sign-vehicle<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the sign-object,<\/em>&nbsp;belong to secondness.&nbsp;&nbsp;The sign is a triadic relation.&nbsp;&nbsp;It brings all three categories into relation.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the contiguity &#8211; the &#8220;substance&#8221; &#8211; manifests both firstness and thirdness, which I package as [stands for (according to a sign-interpretant)].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0019 Here is a picture of&nbsp;<em>two permutations<\/em>&nbsp;of secondness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide04.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide04.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide04-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, there are the terms, &#8220;signifier&#8221; and &#8220;signified&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0020 Obviously, both diagrammatic representations are incomplete, especially in regards to the contiguity.&nbsp;&nbsp;Saussure&#8217;s contiguity is not labeled.&nbsp;&nbsp;Peirce&#8217;s contiguity looks like a mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real elements may be productively compared.&nbsp;&nbsp;A sign-vehicle corresponds to a signifier. Both seem to be like matter, in so far as both pour into (?) the sign-relation.&nbsp;&nbsp;A sign-object goes with the signified.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both seem to be like form, in that they both manifest the shape (?) of the sign-relation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0021 But, what about semiotics and history?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The figure on the right originally associates to the term, &#8220;semiology&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peirce&#8217;s sign-relation associates to the term, &#8220;semiotics&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, is it fair to associate the figure on the right to the term, &#8220;semiotics&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suppose that it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The title of the article<\/em>&nbsp;testifies to&nbsp;<em>the fairness of the association<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0022 Plus, if both Peirce and Saussure die right at&nbsp;<em>the start of the first battle among the Enlightenment gods,<\/em>&nbsp;then&nbsp;<em>this pair of confounded associations<\/em>&nbsp;takes over a century to clarify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0023 This is a very curious historical muddle.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The transnational subtitle,<\/em>&nbsp;which is the explicit subject of the article, and&nbsp;<em>the transit from the first to the fourth battles among the Enlightenment gods,<\/em>&nbsp;which is implicit, coincide.&nbsp;&nbsp;Actuality is visualized by&nbsp;<em>a pair of dyads in the mold of Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe,<\/em>&nbsp;manifesting Peirce&#8217;s category of secondness and hybridizing the explicit (labels) and the implicit (relational diagrams).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Explicit transnational transits in space<\/em>&nbsp;entangle&nbsp;<em>implicit intramodern transits in time<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Implicit transits in time<\/em>substantiate&nbsp;<em>explicit transits in space<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes me wonder whether there is an even wider gyre, an upwelling that goes back centuries, that moves within the bowels of the authors&#8217; story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it like some sort of civilizational fart, that just comes out in the end?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0009 Where does &#8220;semiotics&#8221; enter into the picture?
