But, the garden sprouted on God\u2019s command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When God curses Adam with&nbsp;<em>the law of diminishing returns,<\/em>&nbsp;His curse describes&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0218 Here is my version of McKnight\u2019s eighth thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam names the animals.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>This naming<\/em>&nbsp;depicts&nbsp;<em>speech-alone talk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In hand-speech talk, an animal would name itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Some feature of the animal<\/em>&nbsp;would go into&nbsp;<em>its gestural-name<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is the nature of pantomime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0219 Here is my version of McKnight\u2019s ninth thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam and Eve had the freedom to choose or defy God.&nbsp;&nbsp;They had the capacity to be arrogant.&nbsp;&nbsp;With the help of the serpent, they realized that they could be \u201clike God\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0220&nbsp;<em>This arrogance and grasping for power<\/em>&nbsp;characterizes the battle between&nbsp;<em>the original shamans<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the priests and priestesses of the specialized religions of unconstrained complexity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0221 The original shamans carried on&nbsp;<em>the holistic traditions of the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Their hand-speech traditions<\/em>&nbsp;engaged God, through natural signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In contrast, labor and social specialties<\/em>&nbsp;(empowered by semiotic qualities of speech-alone talk) projected gods into&nbsp;<em>the gaps of their knowledge<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They chose gods who were arrogant, power-grabbing and ready to displace&nbsp;<em>the eternal gods of the shamans<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0222 Here is my version of McKnight\u2019s tenth thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The curses laid on Adam, Eve and the serpent<\/em>&nbsp;depict&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0223 But, worse than any of these curses, is&nbsp;<em>the reality that humans no longer intuitively talk the truth<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When words are icons and indexes, they are true because they picture or point to&nbsp;<em>something<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The fidelity of the word<\/em>&nbsp;is intuitively obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When words are purely symbolic, their truth depends on&nbsp;<em>the entire system of differences that supports them<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This allows us to unwittingly and deceptively alter the meaning, presence and message of words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0224 An example appeared earlier.&nbsp;&nbsp;The word \u201crational\u201d once meant \u201creasonable\u201d and \u201cwithout passion\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now, in 2025, \u201crational\u201d means \u201canything but religious\u201d (where \u201creligion\u201d means \u201cChristian factions\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0225 Here is my version of McKnight\u2019s eleventh thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The stories of Adam and Eve<\/em>&nbsp;set the stage for the emergence of civilization in southern Mesopotamia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast,&nbsp;<em>the ancient (excavated) public myths<\/em>&nbsp;account for&nbsp;<em>the political and religious orders of the time<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0226 Indeed,&nbsp;<em>what follows the Book of Genesis<\/em>&nbsp;is full of irony, since&nbsp;<em>the nation of Israel<\/em>&nbsp;does precisely&nbsp;<em>what Eve did,<\/em>believing its own projections into spoken words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saint Paul put the irony in a nutshell.&nbsp;&nbsp;Once someone else (particularly God) gives a command, our clever little minds start pulling and pushing at the spoken words, hoping to get something for nothing.&nbsp;&nbsp;We do so through our ability to name.&nbsp;&nbsp;We create labels.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, we project our own meanings into the terms.&nbsp;&nbsp;In doing so, we create our own &#8220;reality&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the consequences?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later generations will suffer these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0227 Here is my version of McKnight\u2019s twelfth thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam and Eve are<em>&nbsp;literary and archetypal.&nbsp;<\/em>They bear the<em>&nbsp;image-of-God.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also point, via the genealogies, to&nbsp;<em>events occurring thousands of years ago, not tens of thousands<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The (excavated) literature of the ancient Near East<\/em>&nbsp;does the same.&nbsp;&nbsp;The fact that&nbsp;<em>this living<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>these dead traditions<\/em>&nbsp;are co-extensive (containing different versions of the same story) indicates common descent (followed by modification).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0228 All these stories derive from&nbsp;<em>a single &#8211; worldview transforming &#8211; event, set in motion 7800 years ago (and proceeding, even now, with the loss of hand-speech talk in the North American Plains Indians and the Australian Aborigines)<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This event is called \u201cthe first singularity\u201d and marks the transition from&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>to&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0229&nbsp;<em>The historical Adam<\/em>&nbsp;envisioned by Augustine is untenable.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>A historical and mythic Adam at the start of history<\/em>&nbsp;is tenable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0212 Here is my version of McKnight\u2019s fifth thesis.
