(Part 15 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0148 How did&nbsp;<em>Augustine\u2019s story of the historical Adam<\/em>&nbsp;make it onto the stage?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0149 Saint Augustine did not start out as a saint.&nbsp;&nbsp;He began as a Manichean philosopher, more or less.&nbsp;&nbsp;He gave up that dualistic philosophy then revived it, in a strange reversal, in order to explain why babies should be baptized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0150 The answer concerns Original Sin.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The sacrament of baptism<\/em>&nbsp;removes&nbsp;<em>Original Sin<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0151 So, what did Manicheans think about babies?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0152 The Manicheans adopted&nbsp;<em>an influential Greek philosophy-laden myth<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>their religion of Light and Darkness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The myth starts with a soul, sitting in bliss, in the spiritual world, above a celestial trap door.&nbsp;&nbsp;The trap door opens.&nbsp;&nbsp;The soul starts to fall, tumbling downwards into the material realm.&nbsp;&nbsp;As the soul descends, matter clings to it, surrounding the soul\u2019s immaterial beauty with crass matter, until&#8230; the baby is born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0153 Yes, according to the Manicheans,&nbsp;<em>a baby<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a bundle of evil matter occluding a divine spiritual spark<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;So,&nbsp;<em>the goal of life<\/em>&nbsp;is to escape&nbsp;<em>the evil body<\/em>&nbsp;and return to&nbsp;<em>the source<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0154 Does this scenario sound vaguely New Age?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0155 Anyway, to me,&nbsp;<em>Augustine\u2019s version of the Fall<\/em>&nbsp;reminds me of&nbsp;<em>this baby story<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0156 To start, in paradise, Adam was so rational (not&nbsp;<em>not religious<\/em>, but&nbsp;<em>without passion<\/em>) that he could command his&#8230; what we might call&#8230; privy parts.&nbsp;&nbsp;Eve, I suppose, had to adjust to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRational\u201d is&nbsp;<em>bliss&nbsp;<\/em>to philosophers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0157 Then, came this serpent, who talked to Eve, because it already knew that Adam was perfectly rational, except for his one weak spot: Eve.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>God\u2019s command not to eat the fruit<\/em>&nbsp;was a trap door labeled:&nbsp;<em>the knowledge of good and evil<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0158 Adam and Eve fell, like the unsupported divine spark, into the evil, corrupt and altogether nutty material world.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, they had kids.&nbsp;&nbsp;It went downhill from there.&nbsp;&nbsp;Every one of us directly descends from that disaster.&nbsp;&nbsp;That is why we are all subject to the deprivation of God&#8217;s original justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, wait a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does that last sentence make sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out&nbsp;<em>Looking at Daniel Houck&#8217;s Book (2020) &#8220;Aquinas, Original Sin and the Challenge of Evolution&#8221;,<\/em>&nbsp;appearing in Razie Mah&#8217;s blog for November 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0159 Jesus came into&nbsp;<em>a world full of Original Sin<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;He institutes a sacrament, Baptism, that washes Original Sin away and redeems the&#8230; um&#8230; evil matter holding the divine spark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0160 Yes, I am back to babies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Manichean tale<\/em>&nbsp;<em>of Augustine&#8217;s time<\/em>&nbsp;left every mother&nbsp;<em>nervous<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many children never lived to adulthood.&nbsp;&nbsp;When one died, the mother asked, \u201cWhat will happen to&nbsp;<em>my child&#8217;s divine spark?<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;Will it ever return to&nbsp;<em>the source?<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;How can it escape&nbsp;<em>the imprisoning occluding evil matter of that corpse?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Manicheans had no satisfying answer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0161 In contrast, Augustine offered a way out of this dilemma.&nbsp;&nbsp;What to do with&nbsp;<em>the evil matter that is your baby?<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;Good news.&nbsp;&nbsp;Baptize the infant.&nbsp;&nbsp;God redeems matter and saves the human spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0162 The reversal is marvelous.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jesus is fully human and fully divine.&nbsp;&nbsp;He is the union of the visible and the invisible.&nbsp;&nbsp;How can matter be evil?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The waters of baptism<\/em>&nbsp;transubstantiate&nbsp;<em>evil matter (that looks like a baby)<\/em>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<em>a vessel (that still looks like a baby)<\/em>bearing&nbsp;<em>a soul open to God\u2019s welcoming call<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0163 Augustine routed<em>&nbsp;the Manicheans<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;How could they compete?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0164 Yet, he posed a problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;How does&nbsp;<em>the nastiness of Original Sin<\/em>&nbsp;travel from Adam to me, one of his descendants?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0165&nbsp;<em>Augustine\u2019s answer<\/em>&nbsp;was&nbsp;<em>procreation, a biological function that humans take way too much pleasure in<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Augustine personally suffered the addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So,&nbsp;<em>the mode of transmission<\/em>&nbsp;became&nbsp;<em>part of the descent<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Horniness<\/em>&nbsp;became&nbsp;<em>a sign of Original Sin<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0166 So, what is&nbsp;<em>the historical Adam,<\/em>&nbsp;courtesy of Saint Augustine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKnight lists the attributes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam and Eve were two actual persons, directly created by God.&nbsp;&nbsp;They sinned and brought death into the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;They have a biological relation (descent with modification) to all human beings.&nbsp;&nbsp;Their DNA is our DNA.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, their fallen nature is our sinful nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0167 The problem with direct biological descent is obvious.&nbsp;&nbsp;Whoever claims to&nbsp;<em>not be a descendant of Adam<\/em>&nbsp;would not be in need of Baptism.&nbsp;&nbsp;That person would not need salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0148 How did&nbsp;Augustine\u2019s story of the historical Adam&nbsp;make it onto the stage? 0149 Saint Augustine did not start out as a saint.&nbsp;&nbsp;He began as a Manichean philosopher, more or less.&nbsp;&nbsp;He gave up that dualistic philosophy then revived it, in a strange reversal, in order to explain why babies should be baptized. 0150 The answer concerns [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[417],"tags":[581],"class_list":["post-9791","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-book-review","tag-historical-adam"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Looking at Dennis Venema and Scot McKnight\u2019s Book (2017) &quot;Adam and the Genome&quot;
