{"id":9762,"date":"2025-11-21T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=9762"},"modified":"2025-05-24T17:03:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-24T17:03:49","slug":"looking-at-dennis-venema-and-scot-mcknights-book-2017-adam-and-the-genome-part-7-of-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=9762","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Dennis Venema and Scot McKnight\u2019s Book (2017) &#8220;Adam and the Genome&#8221; (Part 7 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0057 In the next chapter, Venema notes that something remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0058 What about intelligent design?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0059 For me, the question should be: What about the niche?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0060&nbsp;<em>Advocates of intelligent design<\/em>&nbsp;argue that&nbsp;<em>DNA mutation alone<\/em>&nbsp;cannot account for&nbsp;<em>the dramatic changes found in the fossil record<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the Cambrian Period starts with new body designs and highly modified versions of earlier body designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example is the immune system, which is very complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0061 Venema argues that these examples can be explained through methods other than simple mutation, such as insertion and doubling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, simple mutations remain foundational, because&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0062 &#8230;<em>simple mutations<\/em>&nbsp;produce&nbsp;<em>evolution directly observed in the laboratory<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0063 Imagine a culture composed of 1% of bacteria with receptor R and 99% with receptor S.&nbsp;&nbsp;The culture is then infected with a virus that latches onto receptor-R bacteria but cannot infect S bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the virus kills all the R bacteria and that is that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0064 Okay.&nbsp;&nbsp;Let me try that again, starting with 5% R bacteria and 95% S bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time, the virus passes through enough generations that one mutated virus latches onto the S receptor.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now, the virus can further adapt to the presence of the S-receptor.&nbsp;&nbsp;The S-receptor bacteria start to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of this petri-dish wipe-out, the virologists isolate the virus to see how it has changed.&nbsp;&nbsp;As it turns out, the latching protein changed by 5 amino acids, meaning that its original DNA underwent at least 5 separate mutations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0065 Note how the virologist plays god.&nbsp;&nbsp;The virologist defines&nbsp;<em>a niche<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The 95% S bacteria<\/em>&nbsp;constitute&nbsp;<em>an actuality independent of the virus<sub>2a<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;offering the potential of exploitation in&nbsp;<em>the normal context of natural selection<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0066 Here is an example of gene doubling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Two different species of fruit flies<\/em>&nbsp;express&nbsp;<em>different suites of transport proteins<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;One has a single transport protein, deriving from a DNA-site labeled&nbsp;<em>eclair<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The other has two transport proteins,&nbsp;<em>eclair&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>p24<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The second recipe<\/em>&nbsp;came from&nbsp;<em>a doubling of the eclair DNA<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, the second copy underwent mutations, resulting in the second recipe for a transport protein,&nbsp;<em>p24<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0067 Next, entire chromosomes may double.&nbsp;&nbsp;Or they may break and connect to other chromosomes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Large-scale gene duplications<\/em>&nbsp;go a long way in explaining&nbsp;<em>huge changes in phenotype<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;For example,&nbsp;<em>animals with backbones<\/em>&nbsp;came from&nbsp;<em>animals with spinal cords without backbones<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0068 Finally, here is an example of&nbsp;<em>the activation of a completely new recipe<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nylon is an industrial polymer.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the 1970\u2019s, Japanese scientists discover a bacteria that lives off of nylon in an industrial waste pond.&nbsp;&nbsp;The bacteria do so with a completely novel enzyme, which the scientists labeled&nbsp;<em>nylonase<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0069 Venema concludes that intelligent design adds no explanatory value.&nbsp;&nbsp;Living forms have inherent creativity in their DNA.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Simple mutations, gene duplication, and similar mechanisms<\/em>&nbsp;account for&nbsp;<em>descent with modification<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0070 Maybe,&nbsp;<em>changes in genotype<\/em>&nbsp;is the same as&nbsp;<em>intelligent design<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, maybe,&nbsp;<em>intelligent design<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the niche<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0057 In the next chapter, Venema notes that something remains. 0058 What about intelligent design?
