(Part 14 of 23)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0127 Unless, of course, one uses computer simulations (8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the topic is chapter eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Computer simulations assume that spoken words are like tokens.&nbsp;&nbsp;A token is a type.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here,&nbsp;<em>a spoken word<\/em>&nbsp;would be&nbsp;<em>a token of a symbol<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it easy to see the assumption?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Displacement has already occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0128 This brings me to the metaphor that organizes this book.&nbsp;&nbsp;Why does Mithen choose&nbsp;<em>the metaphor of a jigsaw puzzle?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, obviously, the author wants to review&nbsp;<em>various areas of research pertaining to the origins of language<\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>pieces of a problem,<\/em>&nbsp;so that&nbsp;<em>fitting the pieces together<\/em>&nbsp;will offer&nbsp;<em>a solution<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0129 I ask, &#8220;Isn&#8217;t there a another reason that um&#8230; does not qualify as a &#8216;reason&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0130 What is the definition of &#8220;reason&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<em>Original Sin and the Post Truth-Condition<\/em>&nbsp;(by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues), &#8220;reason&#8221; serves as the normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;of the dyadic actuality<sub>2a<\/sub>, {what people think [cannot be objectified as] what people say}<sub>2a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;For the postmodern, reason<sub>3a,1a<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the normal context of the intellect<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;operating on the potential of the will<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, &#8220;pre-modern reason&#8221; is not &#8220;post-modern reason&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the premodern, reason<sub>3a1a<\/sub>&nbsp;is the intellect<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;operating on&nbsp;<em>the potential of the truth<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0131 So, what am I asking for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider&nbsp;<em>the postmodern answer<\/em>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<em>why Mithen chooses the metaphor of a jigsaw puzzle.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, the answer comports with reason<sub>3a1a<\/sub>&nbsp;as the author&#8217;s intellect<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;operating on the potential of the will<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I am asking for&nbsp;<em>an answer that is not obvious,<\/em>&nbsp;where reason<sub>3a,1a<\/sub>&nbsp;is the author&#8217;s intellect<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;operating on the potential of truth<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does Mithen choose&nbsp;<em>the metaphor of a jigsaw puzzle?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Am I registering&nbsp;<em>two different mentalities<\/em>&nbsp;operating within Mithen&#8217;s text?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0132 Why do I take&nbsp;<em>the author&#8217;s metaphor of the jigsaw puzzle<\/em>&nbsp;literally?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From his prior work,&nbsp;<em>The Prehistory Of The Mind,<\/em>&nbsp;I know that Mithen thinks intuitively and holistically.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>His use of the metaphor of the history of the architecture of European cathedrals<\/em>&nbsp;allows&nbsp;<em>an implicit appreciation of explicit theories on the evolution of cognition in hominins<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work under examination is different, because&nbsp;<em>a coherent illumination<\/em>&nbsp;gets veiled by&nbsp;<em>disparate agendas of current research<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The diversity of the so-called pieces of the puzzle<\/em>&nbsp;speaks to&nbsp;<em>an incoherence,<\/em>&nbsp;<em>where pieces do not necessarily lock together<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0133 In my view,&nbsp;<em>a coherent illumination<\/em>&nbsp;may be revealed by&nbsp;<em>biosemiotics<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See&nbsp;<em>Biosemiotics As Noumenon, Parts 1-3,<\/em>&nbsp;by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0134 Without&nbsp;<em>a coherent illumination<\/em>&nbsp;to objectively organize&nbsp;<em>his subjective intuition,<\/em>&nbsp;Mithen blindly reaches for&nbsp;<em>a metaphor that can accomplish the task<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By definition, jigsaw pieces must fit together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Correct?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, but there is another avenue to appreciate Mithen&#8217;s intuition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I take&nbsp;<em>the metaphor<\/em>&nbsp;literally, I can intuitively portray&nbsp;<em>the two crucial adaptations involved in explaining why language evolves in the milieu of hand-talk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide35.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide35.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide35.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide35-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0135&nbsp;<em>A biosemiotic view of signs<\/em>&nbsp;shows&nbsp;<em>how language evolves<\/em>&nbsp;by assigning&nbsp;<em>the iconic and the indexal character of natural signs<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>displacement<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the symbolic character of natural signs<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>grammar<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This view unfolds while examining Mithen&#8217;s text, which explicitly rejects&nbsp;<em>the idea of gestural origins to language<\/em>&nbsp;(in chapter four).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is as if Mithen inadvertently conveys&nbsp;<em>what current research into the evolution of language is not illuminating,<\/em>&nbsp;and in doing so, provides this examiner with a weird sort of challenge.&nbsp;&nbsp;How do&nbsp;<em>the biosemiotic truths embedded within Mithen&#8217;s own text<\/em>&nbsp;betray&nbsp;<em>what he willingly expresses?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What a challenge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suppose, at this juncture, the reader may say, &#8220;Hey, you said that chapters eight (8) and nine (9) stand between the chapters on stone tools (7) and fire (10).\u00a0\u00a0What happened to chapter nine (9)?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0127 Unless, of course, one uses computer simulations (8).
