{"id":9380,"date":"2025-08-27T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=9380"},"modified":"2025-05-04T18:39:41","modified_gmt":"2025-05-04T18:39:41","slug":"looking-at-slavoj-zizeks-book-2024-christian-atheism-part-4-of-33","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=9380","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Slavoj Zizek&#8217;s Book (2024) &#8220;Christian Atheism&#8221; (Part 4 of 33)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0049 Here is a comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Ferdinand de Saussure (1859-1913), the father of modern linguistics, language consists of two arbitrarily related systems of differences,&nbsp;<em>parole&nbsp;<\/em>(speech) and&nbsp;<em>langue<\/em>&nbsp;(whatever goes on in our heads in regards to speech).&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Parole<\/em><em>as speech<\/em>&nbsp;is like capital and acquisition, it provides the resources to utter and to decode.&nbsp;<em>Langue as thought<\/em>&nbsp;is like social behavior and the exercise of an order within the brain&#8230; er&#8230; mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus,&nbsp;<em>parole [utter and decode] langue<\/em>&nbsp;is a single act, just as&nbsp;<em>matter [substance] form<\/em>&nbsp;connotes a single thing or event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide019.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide019.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide019.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide019-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0050 Her is another comparison, which shows how the &#8220;substance&#8221; may be degenerate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Degenerate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn&#8217;t that like &#8220;either\/or&#8221; depending on&nbsp;<em>how two real elements approach one another?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For quantum physics, &#8220;degenerate&#8221; labels&nbsp;<em>two or more standing waves that have the same<\/em>&nbsp;(or &#8220;degenerate&#8221;)&nbsp;<em>orbital<\/em><em>energies<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0051 Taking the carbon atom as an example, electrons orbit the nucleus as standing waves.&nbsp;&nbsp;One electron has a magnetic moment that pairs with another electron&#8217;s magnetic moment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>A magnetically coupled pair of electrons<\/em>&nbsp;occupy&nbsp;<em>an orbital<\/em>&nbsp;(or standing wave).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once two electrons occupy one orbital, then that is it.&nbsp;&nbsp;The orbital is occupied.&nbsp;&nbsp;All other electrons will be repelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carbon has six protons in its nucleus and six electrons in orbitals around the nucleus. The first two electrons go into a spherical orbital close to the nucleus, labeled 1s, yielding 1s<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;(two electrons in the first spherical orbital).&nbsp;&nbsp;The next two electrons have to park themselves further out on the second level, yielding 2s<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, unlike the first level, the second level has additional orbitals corresponding to standing waves with one node (or empty location).&nbsp;&nbsp;These are called &#8220;p-orbitals&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, they are perpendicular to one another.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the remaining two electrons go &#8211; willy nilly &#8211; into the p-orbitals, yielding a final electron configuration of 1s<sup>2<\/sup>2s<sup>2<\/sup>2p<sub>3<\/sub><sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;for the six electrons.&nbsp;&nbsp;Why willy nilly?&nbsp;&nbsp;The three &#8220;p&#8221; orbitals are &#8220;degenerate&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;They have the same energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide020.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide020.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide020.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide020-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0052 Ah, can I guess why Zizek wants to use quantum mechanics as a &#8220;specialized language&#8221; for his discourse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, scientific terms such as &#8220;degenerate&#8221; are used by common folk to refer to human behaviors.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, there is an ambiguity concerning what a fundamental particle, such as an electron, actually is.&nbsp;&nbsp;Is it&nbsp;<em>a charged particle<\/em>&nbsp;or is it&nbsp;<em>a moving or standing wave?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are two suggestions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide021.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide021.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide021-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0053 Of course, whether one observes the electron as a particle or as a wave depends on the measuring apparatus.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, if&nbsp;<em>matter<\/em>&nbsp;associates to&nbsp;<em>presence<\/em>&nbsp;and if&nbsp;<em>form<\/em>&nbsp;associates to&nbsp;<em>what the scientific instrument measures,<\/em>&nbsp;then what is&nbsp;<em>the electron<\/em>?&nbsp;&nbsp;What is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is one option, where the electron is observed as a standing wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide022.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide022.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide022-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0054 Here is another option, where the electron is observed as a particle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide023.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide023.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide023.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide023-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0055 Finally,&nbsp;<em>the actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;that is the electron<\/em>&nbsp;is only understood in&nbsp;<em>a category-based nested form<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide024.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide024.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Slide024-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0056 The electron&#8217;s substance is well&#8230; difficult to imagine.&nbsp;&nbsp;Is [and] sufficient?&nbsp;&nbsp;It makes me wonder about all substances.&nbsp;&nbsp;A [substance] is not one of the two real elements.&nbsp;&nbsp;[Substance] is&nbsp;<em>the contiguity between two real elements<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, a choice has been made by material science, at least, in regards to an electron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It (matter) is a negatively charged, mass-bearing fundament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its form is a standing wave, orbital, and so forth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The selection of the normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;is a choice that curiously establishes the form that the actuality<sub>2<\/sub>manifests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here,&nbsp;<em>the normal context is a measuring apparatus<sub>3<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the potential is observations and measurements of phenomena<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0057 In the chapter three, on superpositions and athings, Zizek delves into Bell&#8217;s theorem and observations of spooky interactions at a distance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Things in the real<\/em>&nbsp;are not&nbsp;<em>what we imagine them to be<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Or, should I say,&nbsp;<em>what they imagine themselves to be?<\/em>&nbsp;In this examination, I will make an effort to use examples that are not so cutting edge, such as&nbsp;<em>the electron subject to a measurement apparatus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My effort does not stand in the way of Zizek&#8217;s approach.&nbsp;&nbsp;If quantum mechanics is the mechanics of very small particles, and if these small particles constitute all material, then quantum mechanics should not be ignored in the philosophy of a real materialist&#8230;
