{"id":9298,"date":"2025-07-16T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=9298"},"modified":"2024-12-21T21:08:13","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T21:08:13","slug":"looking-at-hugh-rosss-book-2023-rescuing-inerrancy-part-14-of-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=9298","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Hugh Ross&#8217;s Book (2023) &#8220;Rescuing Inerrancy&#8221; (Part 14 of 25)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0111 In chapter 9, Ross confronts Christians who exalt grace<sub>3c<\/sub>&nbsp;over nature<sub>3c<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;He calls it &#8220;hard concordism&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or course, this is Ross&#8217;s audience.&nbsp;&nbsp;God bless them.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many know that their &#8220;models&#8221; for so-called &#8220;Creation Science&#8221; have certain weaknesses, the greatest of which is&nbsp;<em>the complete rejection of modern scientific inquiry<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ross does not want that.&nbsp;&nbsp;He aims for a Biblical model that bridges the separation that everyone has agreed upon.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ross&#8217;s audience knows that this is a more sensible path.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, they keep him in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0112 In chapter 9, Ross confronts Christian theologians who exalt nature<sub>3c<\/sub>&nbsp;over grace<sub>3c<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;He calls it &#8220;soft concordism&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, these are the theologians who get grants from foundations interested in&#8230; well&#8230; finding the right academic voices who will speak &#8220;truth&#8221; for &#8220;power&#8221; (or something like that).&nbsp;&nbsp;These theologians are experts in the cultures and languages of the ancient Near East.&nbsp;&nbsp;These theologians have a model for explaining the Creation Story.&nbsp;&nbsp;The first chapter of Genesis depicts&nbsp;<em>the construction of the temple<\/em>&nbsp;(or tent)&nbsp;<em>of the heavens and the earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0113 In chapter 9, Ross challenges both exaltations, by proposing&nbsp;<em>what he calls<\/em>&nbsp;&#8220;a moderate concordism&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is sort of like the Goldilocks fairy tale.&nbsp;&nbsp;He seeks a concordism that is not too hard, not too soft, and feels just right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He uses, as an example, Job 9.8.&nbsp;&nbsp;God alone stretches out the heavens.&nbsp;&nbsp;He calls it&nbsp;<em>a poetic image<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0114 Just hold that thought, while I bring up artistic concordism&#8217;s empirio-schematic once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder where the word &#8220;image&#8221; appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide34.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide34.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide34.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide34-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, there it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is one of Peirce&#8217;s three types of natural signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0115 Let me go over these three types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a sign-relation, a sign-vehicle (SV) stands for a sign-object (SO) in regards to a sign-interpretant (SI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An icon is a sign-relation whose sign-object (SO) manifests on the basis of similarity, images, pictures, and other characteristics of the category of firstness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An index is a sign relation whose sign-object (SO) manifests on the basis of pointing, indicators, contact, cause and effect, and other characteristics of the category of secondness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A symbol is a sign-relation whose sigh-object (SO) manifests on the basis of habit, convention, tradition, law, and other characteristics of the category of thirdness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0116 Ross offers an exercise in artistic concordism by identifying Job 9.8 as an icon.&nbsp;&nbsp;The icon provides a &#8220;poetic&#8221; or &#8220;artistic&#8221; image of its referent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0117 In chapter 10, Ross notes that&nbsp;<em>Reasons To Believe<\/em>&nbsp;is not the only game in town.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sure, Christianity seems to be fixed in their consensus that &#8220;grace&#8221; and &#8220;nature&#8221; are distinct and separate. Yes, all traditional churches<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;and modern positivist institutions<sub>1b&nbsp;<\/sub>are<sub>&nbsp;<\/sub>stuck in&nbsp;<em>a relation<\/em>&nbsp;(secondness) that they no longer recognize might not be&#8230; um&#8230; fruitfully &#8220;conjunct&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, the Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and certain Jesus-loving cults are not so constrained.&nbsp;&nbsp;They harbor full-fledged concordists, who link their scriptures to scientific discoveries with&#8230; a sense of aesthetic abandon.&nbsp;&nbsp;Outside of Ross&#8217;s brand of concordism, which I consider &#8220;artistic&#8221;, rather than &#8220;moderate&#8221;, there are few constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0118 They are all saying the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our scriptures<\/em>&nbsp;contain&nbsp;<em>signs of God&#8217;s natural world, as revealed in scientific models.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why can&#8217;t Ross say the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0111 In chapter 9, Ross confronts Christians who exalt grace3c&nbsp;over nature3c.&nbsp;&nbsp;He calls it &#8220;hard concordism&#8221;.
