(Part 5 of 25)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0038 Inerrancy is tied to dual revelation.&nbsp;&nbsp;Two aspects of one reality are revealed.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the start, these two aspects are grace and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0039&nbsp;<em>The philosophy of Charles Peirce<\/em>&nbsp;enters here.&nbsp;&nbsp;He proposes three categories: firstness, secondness and thirdness.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The category-based nested form<\/em>&nbsp;contains&nbsp;<em>all three categories<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, I want to drill down on secondness.&nbsp;&nbsp;Secondness contains&nbsp;<em>two contiguous real elements<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;For&nbsp;<em>Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe,<\/em>&nbsp;the two real elements are&nbsp;<em>matter<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>form<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The contiguity is placed in brackets for proper notation.&nbsp;&nbsp;What word describes the contiguity between matter and form?&nbsp;&nbsp;I choose the much abused term, &#8220;substance&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;A thing is&nbsp;<em>matter [substance] form<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0040 Now,&nbsp;<em>scholastics of the early medieval period<\/em>&nbsp;(say, in the centuries leading to and including the founding of universities in Europe) express a theological hylomorphe that complements Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide07.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide07.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide07.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide07-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0041 Of course, a modern may object that &#8220;grace&#8221; is not like matter because it is not material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in reply, I note that &#8220;grace&#8221; is being, which stands at one end of a spectrum between relationality and materiality.&nbsp;&nbsp;I could have written the following, &#8220;A purely relational being [substantiates] a natural form.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, the objections do not stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same modern may object that &#8220;nature&#8221; is not susceptible to immaterial, purely relational beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To which I reply, &#8220;Sign-relations are purely relational beings and creatures in nature are always dealing with signs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Indeed, biologist Jakob von Uexkull comes up with a technical word for any living creature&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>world of significance<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The term is &#8216;Umwelt&#8217;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yeah, the noun is capitalized in German.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each noun is like an an-Noun-cement.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0042 Now, I ask, &#8220;Why does Aristotle offer his hylomorphe as the first step in natural philosophy?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the answer, as far as I can see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide08.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide08.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide08-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The normal context of Aristotle&#8217;s philosophy<sub>3<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;brings&nbsp;<em>the actuality of the hylomorphe, matter [substance] form<sub>2<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;into relation with&nbsp;<em>the potential of the material, efficient, formal and final causes<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A person encounters a thing.&nbsp;&nbsp;An inquirer may understand this thing<sub>2<\/sub>, starting with&nbsp;<em>matter [substance] form<sub>2<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Understanding provides a normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0043 Now I ask, &#8220;Why do the early schoolmen offer their hylomorphe as the first step in bringing the revelations of the Old and New Testaments into harmony with the rationality of Greek philosophy?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously,&nbsp;<em>the revelations of the Old and New Testaments<\/em>&nbsp;enter into&nbsp;<em>Greek natural reasonings and redeem them<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The revelations of Jerusalem<\/em>&nbsp;bring&nbsp;<em>Greek philosophy&nbsp;<\/em>to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0044 Okay, when I want to understand how&nbsp;<em>grace [inflows] nature<sub>2<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;I place this hylomorphe into&nbsp;<em>a normal context<sub>3<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>a potential<sub>1<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do I do this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I take a guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide09.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide09.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide09.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide09-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, that is a reasonable guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0045 However, this guess leads to another question, asking, &#8220;If grace<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;is like matter<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and nature<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;is like shape<sub>2<\/sub>, then what label do I put for&nbsp;<em>the equivalent to Aristotle&#8217;s &#8216;thing&#8217;<sub>2<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;given&nbsp;<em>the normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;of the Holy Spirit<sub>3<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;<em>and the potential for &#8216;bringing forth good&#8217;<sub>1<\/sub>?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps,&nbsp;<em>the human as an image of God?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, whatever the label may be, it is not scientific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0038 Inerrancy is tied to dual revelation.&nbsp;&nbsp;Two aspects of one reality are revealed.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the start, these two aspects are grace and nature. 0039&nbsp;The philosophy of Charles Peirce&nbsp;enters here.&nbsp;&nbsp;He proposes three categories: firstness, secondness and thirdness.&nbsp;&nbsp;The category-based nested form&nbsp;contains&nbsp;all three categories.
