(Part 4 of 5)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>1248 Why is this lack of exemplar sign-relation salient<sub>3c((1c))<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 3.1 of chapter 3 of&nbsp;<em>Semiotic Agency<\/em>&nbsp;says that the human individual has three major components: a body (J), cognition (K) and a niche (L).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1249 What does that (J, K, L) tell me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1250 Take a look at Figure 3.1, which portrays each component in a cut and paste manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1251 Surely, the human body (J) corresponds to&nbsp;<em>phenotype<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>the sign object of a specifying relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In section 3.2, the author discusses the human body (J) in terms of subagency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is fine, because&nbsp;<em>subagency<\/em>&nbsp;models&nbsp;<em>[body development<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;operating on the genotype<sub>1a<\/sub>]<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Current research in a variety of disciplines related to genetics<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>relevant<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1252 The niche (L) corresponds to&nbsp;<em>adaptation<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>the sign-object of a specifying sign-relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In section 3.4, the author says that&nbsp;<em>the human niche<\/em>&nbsp;(L) includes the environment (as well as ecology), human artifacts, semiotic factors (such as information and communication) and social conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, but what about triadic relations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1253 The author goes on to wrestle with different approaches to the term, &#8220;niche&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each approach tries to model&nbsp;<em>[natural selection<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;operating on the potential<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;of an actuality independent of the adapting species<sub>2a<\/sub>].&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;But, no approach identifies the one actuality<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;that accounts for&nbsp;<em>convergent evolution among all hominin species<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, I am talking about triadic relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche,<\/em>&nbsp;by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1254 The author raises the idea of a &#8220;cognitive niche&#8221;, which brings me to cognition (K).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 3.3 discusses human cognition (K) in terms of subagents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1255 There are mental modules devoted to sensation, perception, memory, integration and action.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are heterogeneous.&nbsp;&nbsp;They may be called &#8220;cognits&#8221; because they knit cogs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Surely, mental modules and &#8220;cognits&#8221; are neural&#8230; I mean&#8230; cognitive adaptations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Several chapters in&nbsp;<em>Semiotic Agency<\/em>&nbsp;are devoted to these topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 3.5 covers periods of human life in terms of age-related phenotype<sub>3V<\/sub>&nbsp;(J), adaptation<sub>2H<\/sub>&nbsp;(L) and cognition (K).&nbsp;&nbsp;This section rounds off the idea that the human has three components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1256 Cognition (K) corresponds to&nbsp;<em>the union of both phenotype<sub>2H<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(J)&nbsp;<em>and adaptation<sub>2V<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(L) when it comes to human agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, that is very curious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1257 The issue of&nbsp;<em>the salience<sub>3c((1c))<\/sub>&nbsp;of the exemplar sign-relation<\/em>&nbsp;is not raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is this issue important to me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do I see an opportunity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1258 I see that&nbsp;<em>a living being<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>an intersection between adaptation<sub>2H<\/sub>&nbsp;and phenotype<sub>2V<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide343.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide343.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide343.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide343-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I also notice that, when placed into\u00a0<em>the purely relational structure of semiotic agency,<\/em>\u00a0the specifying sign-relation for both adaptation<sub>2b<\/sub>\u00a0and phenotype<sub>2b<\/sub>\u00a0lack exemplar sign-relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1259 So, I wonder, does\u00a0<em>the intersection of neodarwinism<\/em>\u00a0provide\u00a0<em>complementary exemplar sign relations<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>the specifying sign-relations of natural history and genetics?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1248 Why is this lack of exemplar sign-relation salient3c((1c))?
