(Part 1 of 4)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0600 The text before me is chapter thirteen of&nbsp;<em>Pathways<\/em>&nbsp;(2024).&nbsp;&nbsp;See point 0474 for book details.&nbsp;&nbsp;The chapter title is &#8220;The Sentient Cell&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The chapter is the first in Part III, titled &#8220;Meaning in Organism Behavior and Cognition&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The chapter covers pages 281 to 298.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The authors of the chapter<\/em>&nbsp;hale from&nbsp;<em>diverse locations<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Arthur Reber works in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, Canada.&nbsp;&nbsp;Frantisek Baluska is located at the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Botany, at the University of Bonn, Germany, and William Miller Jr. resides in the delocalized Bioverse Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0601 Delocalized?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where else is one to locate bioversity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0602 The abstract covers, in so many words, familiar territory (1 and 2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First (1), semiotic agents<sub>3,1<\/sub>&nbsp;are characterized by relationality, as well as thingness.&nbsp;&nbsp;The category-based nested form serves to illustrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide187.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide187.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8927\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide187.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide187-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Semiotic agency is a dyadic &#8220;thing&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire category-based nested form is a triadic &#8220;thing&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0603&nbsp;<em>The category-based nested form<\/em>&nbsp;includes&nbsp;<em>all three of Peirce&#8217;s categories<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each category expresses its own logic.&nbsp;&nbsp;Category-based nested forms are fractal.&nbsp;&nbsp;These lessons are garnered from two e-articles,&nbsp;<em>A Primer on the Category-Based Nested Form<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>A Primer on Sensible and Social Construction,<\/em>&nbsp;by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0604 Second (2), agents<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and their potentials<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;may be arranged hierarchically.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lower-level subagents support the functionality of higher-level agency.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the same time, higher-level agents call upon the operations of lower-level subagents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peirce has&nbsp;<em>a technical term for the way thirdness contextualizes secondness and secondness situates firstness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;He calls it &#8220;precission&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some biologists offer a term for the way that higher-level agents appear to emerge from and situate lower-level agents.&nbsp;&nbsp;They offer the word, &#8220;control&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, &#8220;control&#8221; is already&nbsp;<em>a technical term used in mechanical and electrical engineering<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I wonder whether&nbsp;<em>these applications of the physical sciences<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>appropriate analogies for biosemiotics<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0605 So, I propose a word familiar to modern politics, and more appropriate to entities that are born, live and die.&nbsp;&nbsp;The word starts like &#8220;precission&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The word ends like &#8220;tide&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;And, the word conveys the impression of an agent<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;calling subagents<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;into a unified exercise of intentionity<sub>1<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word is &#8220;presides&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0606 A higher-level agent<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;presides over subagents through the engagement of its semiotic agency<sub>2<\/sub>, arising from the potential of &#8216;something intentional&#8217;<sub>1<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subagents are built into an agent&#8217;s semiotic agency<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and participate in its sign-interpretants of the specifying and exemplar sign-relations (SI<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;and SI<sub>e<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of semiotic agency and its sign-elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide188.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide188.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8928\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide188.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide188-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0607 The authors do not frame these now-familiar lessons (1 and 2) in terms of agent<sub>3((1)<\/sub>&nbsp;and semiotic agency<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, they marvel at the coterminality of life (cell) and awareness (sentience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why use the terms, &#8220;life&#8221; and &#8220;sentience&#8221;, as if they are separate concepts, the latter eventually qualifying the former?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in the article, the authors couple &#8220;sentience&#8221; and &#8220;consciousness&#8221; as if the latter is &#8220;what the cell would be if it were&#8230; um&#8230; subjectively experiencing the world like us (humans).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0608 Of course, sentient cells are not &#8220;conscious&#8221;
