claim?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A multiplicity of subagents<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a typical feature of agency<\/em>&nbsp;and is necessary for&nbsp;<em>a higher-level agent&#8217;s reliable self-construction, robustness and adaptability<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subagents are semi-autonomous.&nbsp;&nbsp;The co-exist in partially cooperative and partially antagonistic manners.&nbsp;&nbsp;In many cases,&nbsp;<em>semiogenesis<\/em>&nbsp;occurs when&nbsp;<em>one subagent<\/em>&nbsp;provides the scaffolding that facilitates, represses or redirects&nbsp;<em>the development of another subagent<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0480 Subagents characterize anatomy and physiology in animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Animals are subject to natural selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, some parasites play the game of subagency very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0481 So, let me start with&nbsp;<em>the Sharov and Tonnessen noumenal overlay<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide157.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide157.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8872\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide157.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide157-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0482 Obviously, subagents are employed in the specifying and exemplar sign-interpretants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0483 The authors&#8217; first example is a single-celled paramecium.&nbsp;&nbsp;The length of the cell in 300 micrometers.&nbsp;&nbsp;Is that one third of a millimeter?&nbsp;&nbsp;Subagents include a macronucleus, micronucleus, pellicle, gullet, food vacuoles, anal pore and so forth.&nbsp;&nbsp;None of the subagents are truly self-governing.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each plays a role in various courses of action, depending on&nbsp;<em>what the paramecium is going to do<\/em>&nbsp;(SO<sub>e<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are my associations for a paramecium&#8217;s semiotic agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide158.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide158.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide158.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide158-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0484 If this is the noumenon, then what are the phenomena?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to find out, I take the paramecium into my laboratory (actually, it&#8217;s an academic biology lab) and vary its environmental conditions (SV<sub>s<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;The paramecium is a holobiont (a whole, living organism).&nbsp;&nbsp;At any given moment, it acts as an agent<sub>3<\/sub>, whose main motivation seems to be &#8216;staying alive&#8217;<sub>1<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is where&nbsp;<em>semiotic agency<sub>2<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some conditions produce responses (SO<sub>e<\/sub>) that indicate that the paramecium responds to something in its environment (SO<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;and SV<sub>e<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;Sign-vehicles and sign-objects give rise to phenomena.&nbsp;&nbsp;Indeed,&nbsp;<em>these sign-elements<\/em>&nbsp;are objectified by&nbsp;<em>my observations and measurements of those phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0485 But, what about the paramecium as&nbsp;<em>an agent?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide159.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide159.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8874\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide159.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide159-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>478 The text before me is chapter 10 of&nbsp;Semiotic Agency&nbsp;(2021).&nbsp;&nbsp;Details on the text may be found on point 0473.&nbsp;&nbsp;Chapter 10 covers pages 291-312. 0479 The authors&#8217;
