{"id":8739,"date":"2025-02-22T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-22T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8739"},"modified":"2024-12-14T16:24:18","modified_gmt":"2024-12-14T16:24:18","slug":"a-peircean-view-of-semiotic-agency-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8739","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Alexei Sharov and Morten Tonnessen&#8217;s Book (2021) &#8220;Semiotic Agency&#8221; (Part 24 of 24)\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0264 What do I conclude?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time that the authors finish Parts II and IV of&nbsp;<em>Semiotic Agency<\/em>, the range of applications expands into Parts I-IV of&nbsp;<em>Pathways to the Origin and Evolution of Meanings of the Universe<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0265 Is such an expansion warranted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From my examination of Parts I and III of&nbsp;<em>Semiotic Agency,<\/em>&nbsp;I may say, &#8220;Yes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Biosemiotics entails a re-articulation of biology and the social sciences.&nbsp;&nbsp;Biosemiotics also reveals the nature of phenomenology, cybernetics and the psychometric sciences.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0266&nbsp;<em>The re-articulation of biology and the social sciences in the light of biosemiotics<\/em>&nbsp;is just beginning.&nbsp;&nbsp;In looking at Part I and III of&nbsp;<em>Semiotic Agency,<\/em>&nbsp;I could sense the breadth of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0267 The problem concerns&nbsp;<em>the status of the noumenon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural scientists never worry about the noumenon, because the noumenon should be obvious. Indeed, triumphalist scientists want to paper over each natural noumenon with a successful model.&nbsp;&nbsp;Social scientists observe and measure social phenomena then pull&nbsp;<em>the associated noumena<\/em>&nbsp;from holes in the ground.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Phenomenologists<\/em>&nbsp;promote intuitive methods for guessing&nbsp;<em>what a noumenon must be<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sharov and Tonnessen re-format&nbsp;<em>the triadic specifying sign-relation<\/em>into&nbsp;<em>a dyadic structure amenable to empirio-schematic inquiry<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I call their discovery, &#8220;the Sharov and Tonnessen noumenal overlay&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0268 The authors call it &#8220;semiotic agency&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0269&nbsp;<em>Semiotic agency,<\/em>&nbsp;depicted as&nbsp;<em>a dyad<\/em>&nbsp;(agency)&nbsp;<em>within a dyad<\/em>&nbsp;(semiotic agency), forces scientists to re-examine&nbsp;<em>all that has gone before<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, that is quite an accomplishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0270&nbsp;<em>The task before me<\/em>&nbsp;remains.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>A sea of biosemiosis<\/em>&nbsp;lies before me.&nbsp;&nbsp;The question is&nbsp;<em>how to traverse the waters<\/em>.&nbsp;How to set sail?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to examine Parts II and IV of&nbsp;<em>Semiotic Agency<\/em>&nbsp;(2021) and Parts I, II, III and IV of&nbsp;<em>Pathways<\/em>&nbsp;(2024) I plan to take certain steps, listed in the following script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Slide086.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Slide086.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Slide086.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Slide086-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This script allows me to examine here and there, like a bumbling bee in a spring field, not certain about a proper path, and inadvertently pollinating along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I begin by looking at&nbsp;<em>the chapters on the origins of life<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0264 What do I conclude?
