Comments on the text will appear in square brackets.<\/p>\n<p>[The scribes and Pharisees rightly concluded that God made a covenant with the tribes of Israel:\u00a0 Obey my laws and I will bless you. Disobey my laws and I will no longer protect you.<\/p>\n<p>So they focused on the law.<\/p>\n<p>A think<sup>group<\/sup><sub>3<\/sub> emerged along with an intricate web, a symbolic order, that trapped the imagination \u2013 and the conscience \u2013 of all who belonged.\u00a0 A bureaucracy, promulgating multitudinous and conflicting regulations, left the believer paralyzed, unable to cope, dependent on the experts to tell her what to do.\u00a0 Everyone broke the ritual constraints one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>The locus of responsibility shifted from the free person to the bureaucratic accuser.\u00a0 The scribe and Pharisee implicitly accused the believer of holding an unlawful worldview and a lawless conscience; that is, a think<sup>unlawful<\/sup><sub>3<\/sub> and a conscience<sup>unlawful<\/sup><sub>1<\/sub>.\u00a0 They thought that they were better people; that is think<sup>lawfilled<\/sup><sub>3<\/sub> and conscience<sup>lawfilled<\/sup><sub>1<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus pointed this out.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, he sounds strangely relevant to our times.\u00a0 His critique grounds one feature that defines my category-based definition of the word \u201creligion\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cReligion\u201d is precisely structured as \u201ca relation between think<sup>group<\/sup> and think<sup>divine<\/sup> \u201c (even though it may not contain these elements explicitly) within the structure of the intersecting nested forms.]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I comment on the text.\u00a0 Pages 2-6.
