0165 Allow me to discuss the entire judgment<\/em> starting with the relation <\/em>(thirdness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The psychometric intellect<\/em> employs two normal contexts, a positivist one3c<\/sub><\/em> and expertise3<\/sub><\/em>b<\/sub>.  Note the subscripts.  The subscripts apply to a three-level interscope developed in Looking at Steve Fuller’s Book (2021) “A Player’s Guide To The Post-Truth Condition”<\/em> (appearing in Razie Mah’s blog in July 2024).  Subscripts 1, 2 and 3 correspond to potential1<\/sub>, actuality2<\/sub> and normal context3<\/sub>. Subscripts a, b and c correspond to contenta<\/sub>, situationb<\/sub> and perspectivec<\/sub>levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The psychometric intellect<\/em> has a rule.  That rule is not quite the same as the mandate of<\/em> the positivist intellect<\/em>.  The positivist intellect says, “Metaphysics is not allowed.”  This constitutes a ban on Aristotle’s formal and final causes.  But, what of the psychometric sciences?  What do they permit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0166 Allow me to elaborate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natural sciences depend on “truncated” material and efficient causes, because they are necessary for mathematical and mechanical models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The social sciences fudge, as one sees with the phenomenologist’s Positivist judgment<\/em>.  Social scientists ignore metaphysics.  As a result, novel “mechanistic” models<\/em> reduce observations and measurements of social phenomena<\/em> to material and efficient causes that slyly incorporate formal and final causation<\/em>.  Metaphysics<\/em> slips into social science models<\/em> through an open backdoor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cybernetic sciences<\/em> admit that metaphysics is allowed (and is not ignored).  Formal and final causes<\/em> may appear in mechanistic models of habit<\/em>.  At the same time, “metaphysics” changes its definition to “religious”.  So, cybernetic models are “not metaphysical”, because they are “not religious”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The psychometric sciences<\/em> apply the cybernetic approach<\/em> to the political sciences<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0167 The psychometric sciences<\/em> constitute the situation-level of a three-level interscope<\/em>.  Rather than ignoring metaphysics (like social sciences) or grudgingly accepting them (like cybernetics), the psychometric sciences play a language game.  Metaphysical mechanisms are not “metaphysical”, therefore the label cannot apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah, that makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is about politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0168 Take a look at what ought to be<\/em> (secondness) and what is<\/em> (firstness) for the psychometric Positivist’s judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expertise involved in the psychometric sciences<\/em> is geared to explaining observations and measurements<\/em> of what people say<\/em> in response to an interventionalist “sign”<\/em>.  Whenever the “system” takes an action, that action impacts people who are not involved in… um… “the decision2c<\/sub>” to take action.  Nevertheless, people3a<\/sub> are effected1a<\/sub>.  People3a<\/sub> will talk about those impacts1a<\/sub>.  Those statements2a<\/sub> become the phenomena2a<\/sub> that experts2b<\/sub> observe and measure1b<\/sub><\/em>.  Then, the experts3b<\/sub> produce capitalist and socialist models2b<\/sub>, couched in the language of science3c<\/sub>.  These models2b<\/sub> offer opportunities1c<\/sub> for “the system”3c<\/sub> to make another “decision”2c<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0169 A cyberneticist may portray the above paragraph as a functional… er… dysfunctional circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does this suggest?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, people say a lot of things.  The expert is only interested in statements that (1) concern the person’s experiences2a<\/sub>in regards to an interventional sign-vehicle2c<\/sub> and (2) are capable of becoming data1b<\/sub> for capitalist and socialist models2b<\/sub>.  So, the psychometric expert3b<\/sub> dismisses almost everything that anyone says and only record statements relevant to their models2b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
