{"id":8605,"date":"2025-01-28T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8605"},"modified":"2024-12-14T14:51:58","modified_gmt":"2024-12-14T14:51:58","slug":"looking-at-alexei-sharov-and-morten-tonnessens-book-2021-semiotic-agency-part-4-of-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8605","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Alexei Sharov and Morten Tonnessen&#8217;s Book (2021) &#8220;Semiotic Agency&#8221; (Part 4 of 24)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0029 The sign-relation has a triadic structure involving three elements: sign-vehicle, sign-object and sign-interpretant.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The formula for expressing a specifying sign-relation<\/em>&nbsp;goes like this: A sign-vehicle (SV<sub>s<\/sub>) stands for (or &#8220;specifies&#8221;) a sign-object (SO<sub>s<\/sub>) in regards to a sign-interpretant (SI<sub>s<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Kull&#8217;s criteria can be observed and measured and since they are integral to each agent, then these four phenomena must belong to a specifying sign-object (SO<sub>s<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;This SO<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;situates a sign-vehicle (SV<sub>s<\/sub>) that corresponds to a content-level actuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide009.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide009.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide009.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide009-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0030 Well, that is a good first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about the specifying sign-interpretant (SI<sub>s<\/sub>)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps I can assign two of Kull&#8217;s four phenomena to the SI<sub>s<\/sub>, as in the following figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide010.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide010.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide010.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide010-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A content-level actuality (SV<sub>s<\/sub>) specifies (stands for) a goal (SO<sub>s<\/sub>) in regards to an agent&#8217;s self governance operating on possible courses of action (SI<sub>s<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0031 Now, I already mentioned that the judgment (as a triadic relation) unfolds into a single category-based nested form.&nbsp;&nbsp;A normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;brings actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;into relation with the possibility of &#8216;something&#8217;<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thirdness brings secondness into relation with firstness.&nbsp;&nbsp;(See&nbsp;<em>A Primer on the Category-Based Nested Form,<\/em>&nbsp;by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The specifying sign-relation is not so simple.&nbsp;&nbsp;A SV<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;stands for a SO<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;in regards to a SI<sub>s<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both SV<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;and SO<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;belong to secondness, the realm of actuality.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, they do so on different levels.&nbsp;&nbsp;The SV<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;is a content-level actuality.&nbsp;&nbsp;The content level associates to firstness.&nbsp;&nbsp;The SO<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;is a situation-level actuality and therefore, virtually situates the SV<sub>s<\/sub>. The situation level associates to secondness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leaves the SI<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;as the normal context<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;that contextualizes the situation-level actuality<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;and the potential<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;that underlies the situation-level actuality<sub>2b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;In other words, the SI<sub>s<\/sub>&nbsp;is the situation-level normal context<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;operating on a situation-level potential<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0032 Here is a picture of the specifying sign, within a two-level situation level may be rebranded as&nbsp;<em>the agent level<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The content-level can be labeled&nbsp;<em>the event<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>sign-vehicle<\/em>&nbsp;<em>level<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An event can serve as a sign-vehicle.&nbsp;&nbsp;People routinely confound the sign-vehicle with the sign-relation.&nbsp;&nbsp;This makes sense, in so far as a sign-vehicle stands for its sign-object in regards to a sign-interpretant.&nbsp;&nbsp;Therefore, the sign-vehicle and the sign-relation are inseparable.&nbsp;&nbsp;The event-level contains a real actuality<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;(SV<sub>s<\/sub>) that initiates a sign-relation containing another real actuality<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;(SO<sub>s<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;The event is&nbsp;<em>semiotic<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0036 Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note how I move the sign-object (SO<sub>s<\/sub>) to&nbsp;<em>the object in contiguity with a goal<\/em>&nbsp;since&nbsp;<em>the object<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the goal<\/em>&nbsp;each have&nbsp;<em>their own labels<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;For biosemiotic processes, the object is like matter and the goal is like form.&nbsp;&nbsp;The contiguity is reserved for later discussion.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the moment, suffice to say that the agent actualizes&nbsp;<em>an object (SO<sub>s<\/sub>) [in contiguity with] a goal<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The agent<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;actualizes agency<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also,&nbsp;<em>the agent as interpretant<\/em>&nbsp;says, &#8220;The normal context of self-governance<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;operates on the possibility of &#8216;courses of action&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0037 I ask, &#8220;Does&nbsp;<em>this sign-containing two-level interscope of agency or agent<sub>b<\/sub>(event<sub>a<\/sub>)<\/em>&nbsp;qualify as&nbsp;<em>a noumenal overlay?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In section 1.1, the authors wonder whether this agency<sub>b<\/sub>(semiotic<sub>a<\/sub>) can serve as a subject of science.&nbsp;&nbsp;The answer is affirmative, under the condition that the above noumenon manifests&nbsp;<em>observable and measurable facets<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The resulting data<\/em>&nbsp;may then be used, under the guidance of a disciplinary language, to produce mathematical and mechanical models.&nbsp;&nbsp;Or, if not explicitly mathematical or mechanical, then models, nonetheless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, in principle, each successful model can be set over this noumenal overlay, and we don&#8217;t have to worry
