0023 In a weird sort of way, biosemiotics parallels laboratory science.  Biosemiotics seeks a recipe where a sign-relation<\/em> can substitute for a noumenon<\/em>.  Semiotics<\/em> goes with sign-relations<\/em>.  Agency<\/em> goes with the operations of biological agents<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the parallel fails.  Semiotic agency<\/em> is not a successful empirio-schematic model,<\/em> worthy enough to place over its noumenon.  Semiotic agency is a philosophical formulation,<\/em> which contains all four of Aristotle’s causalities<\/em> in such a way that metaphysical unities<\/em> express distinctive phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In sum, semiotic agency,<\/em> properly defined, may satisfy the positivist intellectual mandate<\/em> that metaphysics is not allowed.  How?  Semiotic agency<\/em> places metaphysical unities <\/em>within the noumenon, which gives rise to phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0024 In sum, Sharov and Tonnessen’s challenge<\/em> is to produce a vision of semiotic agency<\/em> that is not a natural science model, but can serve as what the noumenon must be,<\/em> in order to be objectified as biosemiotic phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0025 I now have set the stage for examining section 1.1, titled “Agency as a Subject of Science”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If semiotic agency overlays the noumenon, then I can discern its phenomena.  Phenomena<\/em> are observable and measurable facets<\/em> that objectify their noumenal overlay<\/em>.  Semiotic agency, for biosemiotics, parallels successful physical, chemical or biochemical models, for the laboratory sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0026 Where to start the construction of semiotic agency<\/em> as a noumenal overlay?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authors refer to a 2009 paper by Kaveli Kull, who proposes the following what is<\/em> for the Positivist’s judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To me, the agent looks like a reasonable noumenon.  Plus, an agent cannot be fully objectified as its measurable and observable facets (phenomena)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0027 For the Kantian slogan, the agent<\/em> (or agency)<\/em> is the noumenon<\/em>.  The noumenon<\/em> cannot be objectified as its phenomena<\/em>.  The noumenon<\/em> is a<\/em> semiotic agency<\/em>.  Its phenomena<\/em> follow the<\/em> four criteria for agent behavior<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what if, through philosophical sleight of hand, I substitute a sign-relation<\/em> as a noumenal overlay<\/em> over agent as noumenon?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, what if the four points listed as phenomena<\/em> are embedded within that sign-relation?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, the noumenon changes from “agent” to “semiotic agency”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
