(Part 3 of 24)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0023 In a weird sort of way, biosemiotics parallels laboratory science.&nbsp;&nbsp;Biosemiotics seeks a recipe where&nbsp;<em>a sign-relation<\/em>&nbsp;can substitute for&nbsp;<em>a noumenon<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Semiotics<\/em>&nbsp;goes with&nbsp;<em>sign-relations<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Agency<\/em>&nbsp;goes with&nbsp;<em>the operations of biological agents<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the parallel fails.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Semiotic agency<\/em>&nbsp;is not&nbsp;<em>a successful empirio-schematic model,<\/em>&nbsp;worthy enough to place over its noumenon.&nbsp;&nbsp;Semiotic agency is&nbsp;<em>a philosophical formulation,<\/em>&nbsp;which contains&nbsp;<em>all four of Aristotle&#8217;s causalities<\/em>&nbsp;in such a way that&nbsp;<em>metaphysical unities<\/em>&nbsp;express&nbsp;<em>distinctive phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In sum,&nbsp;<em>semiotic agency,<\/em>&nbsp;properly defined, may satisfy&nbsp;<em>the positivist intellectual mandate<\/em>&nbsp;that metaphysics is not allowed.&nbsp;&nbsp;How?&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Semiotic agency<\/em>&nbsp;places&nbsp;<em>metaphysical unities&nbsp;<\/em>within<em>&nbsp;the noumenon, which gives rise to phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0024 In sum,&nbsp;<em>Sharov and Tonnessen&#8217;s challenge<\/em>&nbsp;is to produce&nbsp;<em>a vision of semiotic agency<\/em>&nbsp;that is not a natural science model, but can serve as&nbsp;<em>what the noumenon must be,<\/em>&nbsp;in order to be objectified as&nbsp;<em>biosemiotic phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide007.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide007.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide007.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide007-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0025 I now have set the stage for examining section 1.1, titled &#8220;Agency as a Subject of Science&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If semiotic agency overlays the noumenon, then I can discern its phenomena.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Phenomena<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>observable and measurable facets<\/em>&nbsp;that objectify&nbsp;<em>their noumenal overlay<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Semiotic agency, for biosemiotics, parallels successful physical, chemical or biochemical models, for the laboratory sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0026 Where to start the construction of&nbsp;<em>semiotic agency<\/em>&nbsp;as a&nbsp;<em>noumenal overlay?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors refer to a 2009 paper by Kaveli Kull, who proposes the following&nbsp;<em>what is<\/em>&nbsp;for the Positivist&#8217;s judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide008.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide008.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide008.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide008-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, the agent looks like a reasonable noumenon.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, an agent cannot be fully objectified as its measurable and observable facets&nbsp;<em>(phenomena)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0027 For the Kantian slogan,&nbsp;<em>the agent<\/em>&nbsp;<em>(or agency)<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the noumenon<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;cannot be objectified as&nbsp;<em>its phenomena<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a<\/em>&nbsp;<em>semiotic agency<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Its phenomena<\/em>&nbsp;follow&nbsp;<em>the<\/em>&nbsp;<em>four criteria for agent behavior<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what if, through philosophical sleight of hand, I substitute&nbsp;<em>a sign-relation<\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>a noumenal overlay<\/em>&nbsp;over&nbsp;<em>agent as noumenon?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, what if&nbsp;<em>the four points listed as phenomena<\/em>&nbsp;are embedded within that&nbsp;<em>sign-relation?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the noumenon changes from &#8220;agent&#8221;
