um&#8230; how one real element accounts for the other real element.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of&nbsp;<em>Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Peirce&#8217;s category of secondness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide004.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide004.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide004.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide004-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0015 Yes, both these figures associate to&nbsp;<em>Peirce&#8217;s category of secondness,<\/em>&nbsp;the realm of actuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, according to the Positivist&#8217;s judgment,&nbsp;<em>the noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;(the thing itself) and its phenomena (the observable and measurable facets of the noumenon) belong to&nbsp;<em>the category of firstness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of&nbsp;<em>a slogan that may be attributed to the German philosopher, Immanuel Kant<\/em>&nbsp;(1724-1802 AD), even though he may never have actually said it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide005.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide005.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide005.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide005-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0016 Isn&#8217;t that how philosophy operates?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A lifetime of dedicated thinking<\/em>&nbsp;gets alchemically distilled into&nbsp;<em>a slogan propounded by people who claim to be dedicated to philosophy,<\/em>&nbsp;but are only&nbsp;<em>gossips<\/em>&nbsp;<em>spreading unwarranted attributions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0017 Well, maybe not &#8220;unwarranted&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kant&#8217;s slogan makes a crucial point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how&nbsp;<em>many observations and measurements of phenomena<\/em>&nbsp;that one makes,&nbsp;<em>the resulting model<\/em>&nbsp;does not fully objectify&nbsp;<em>the thing itself<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0018 Kant&#8217;s slogan is anathema for any scientist who is convinced that science is the only reliable way to approach reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, scientists are a hearty sort, even when wounded by&nbsp;<em>technically appropriate statements that are anathema<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;One hundred years after Kant (and I suspect, even during Kant&#8217;s lifetime), triumphalist scientists have a response-at-hand.&nbsp;&nbsp;The noumenon is a philosophical construct.&nbsp;&nbsp;Therefore, it may be regarded as the first approximation to a successful model, which can be objectified as its phenomena.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since the model belongs to secondness in both the Positivist&#8217;s and empirio-schematic judgments, the model is more actual than the noumenon.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the model should replace the noumenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0019 If&nbsp;<em>a model<\/em>&nbsp;overlays&nbsp;<em>the noumenon,<\/em>&nbsp;then the apparent contradiction resolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide006.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide006.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide006.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Slide006-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn&#8217;t that cathartic?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0020 Well, it is good enough for scientists who are not much interested in philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start, how can&nbsp;<em>a mathematical or mechanical model<\/em>&nbsp;be the source of the phenomena that is observed and measured in order to generate&#8230; um&#8230; itself, through the medium of a scientific disciplinary language?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0021 Okay, what about&nbsp;<em>a college-level physics or chemistry or biology laboratory?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever noticed that some students (especially the one&#8217;s susceptible to philosophical inquiry) find each laboratory perplexing, as an instructor leads the class through a recipe that demonstrates that&nbsp;<em>the principles behind the recipe<\/em>&nbsp;are as real as well&#8230; any thing that you&#8217;d find in nature?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The laboratory recipe allows one to generate&nbsp;<em>the phenomena that need to be observed and measured<\/em>&nbsp;(please correctly fill out the experiment&#8217;s fact sheet) in order to validate that&nbsp;<em>the model<\/em>&nbsp;[can be objectified as]&nbsp;<em>its phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, the instructor never mentions Kant&#8217;s slogan, because the instructor has excluded philosophy so rigorously that&nbsp;<em>things themselves<\/em>&nbsp;can be replaced by&nbsp;<em>scientific mathematical and mechanical models<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0022&nbsp;&nbsp;From&nbsp;<em>the point of view of a college instructor,<\/em>&nbsp;the model (overlaying the noumenon) can be objectified as its phenomena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The instructor does not realize that&nbsp;<em>the phenomena<\/em>&nbsp;have changed.
