signifies something that is founded within this relation, and may be labeled as&nbsp;<em>a secundum dici relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My guess is that the creature knows that &#8220;master&#8221; is an appropriate label to apply to one&#8217;s creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the creature knows&nbsp;<em>what to say<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>how to say it<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0055 In hand talk, the appellation would be a gesture of self-humiliation, such as laying flat on the ground or kneeling.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tradition establishes the protocol.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The one who kneels<\/em>&nbsp;associates to matter and&nbsp;<em>dici<\/em>&nbsp;(hand talk).&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The one who is being knelt to<\/em>&nbsp;associates to form and&nbsp;<em>relationes<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The kneeling one<\/em>&nbsp;(like matter and&nbsp;<em>dici<\/em>)&nbsp;<em>honors<\/em>&nbsp;(the contiguity or &#8220;cause&#8221;)&nbsp;<em>the one who is being knelt to<\/em>&nbsp;(like form and&nbsp;<em>relationes<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In hand talk,&nbsp;<em>dici (hand talk)<\/em>&nbsp;[predicates]&nbsp;<em>relationes<\/em>&nbsp;(the relation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hand talk does so because it coheres with&nbsp;<em>esse<\/em>&nbsp;(existence)&nbsp;<em>[secundum]<\/em>&nbsp;<em>relationes<\/em>&nbsp;(relation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0056 Speech-alone talk produces an odd reversal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The creature who would be gesturing, but is now speaking,<\/em>&nbsp;associates to&nbsp;<em>matter and relationes<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The specific terminology of the appellation<\/em>&nbsp;associates to&nbsp;<em>form and dici (speech-alone talk).&nbsp;<\/em>The contiguity involves knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide18-6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide18-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide18-6.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide18-6-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Does this imply that&nbsp;<em>relationes&nbsp;<\/em>(the relation)<em>&nbsp;<\/em>[predicates]<em>&nbsp;dici (speech-alone talk)?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0057 In the third sample, Aquinas considers&nbsp;<em>Disputed Questions on the Power of God<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the character of the distinction between&nbsp;<em>relationes secundum esse<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>relationes secundum dici?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well that should be obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0058 If I ask, &#8220;How do I get to the farmer&#8217;s market.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer, &#8220;Go to the town square.&#8221;, expresses&nbsp;<em>the esse relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer, &#8220;Go down the street until St. Mary&#8217;s Church, then turn right and go two blocks.&#8221;, expresses&nbsp;<em>the dici relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0059&nbsp;<em>Esse relations<\/em>&nbsp;have one terminus in the real (in this answer, the town square).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Dici&nbsp;<\/em>relations have one terminus in reason (in this answer, a right turn at a landmark).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0060 So, I wonder, what is Aquinas up to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does philosophy arise in ancient Greece?&nbsp;&nbsp;Why is Aristotle so revered?&nbsp;&nbsp;Here is one answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Opinions&nbsp;<\/em>(beings of reason or&nbsp;<em>ens rationis<\/em>) cannot be trusted.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>What is real<\/em>&nbsp;(beings of realness or&nbsp;<em>ens reale<\/em>) are far more trustworthy.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the task of the philosopher is to ascertain&nbsp;<em>what is real<\/em>&nbsp;in the face of&nbsp;<em>a variety of opinions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0061 Ah, that sounds like Aquinas&#8217;s agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Relationes secundum esse<\/em>&nbsp;have one terminus in the real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Relationes secundum dici<\/em>&nbsp;<em>(speech-alone talk)<\/em>&nbsp;have one terminus in&#8230;
