(Part 12 of 23)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0115 What is the structure of a sign?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sign is a triadic relation, where a sign-vehicle stands for a sign-object in regards to a sign-interpretant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0116 How does this correspond to Peirce&#8217;s categories?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a first approximation, Peirce assigns the sign-vehicle to firstness, the sign-object to secondness, and the sign-interpretant to thirdness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is a good start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0117 How do the elements of sign correspond to the category-based nested form?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, both the sign-vehicle and the sign-object are actual<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This implies that the sign-relation entangles two category-based nested forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Peirce&#8217;s first two assignments<\/em>&nbsp;suggests that the two nested forms are separated by one level.&nbsp;&nbsp;One expects that the sign-vehicle is on level n and the sign-object is on level n+1.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is one exception.&nbsp;&nbsp;If n=3 then n+1=1, rather than 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Peirce&#8217;s third assignment<\/em>&nbsp;suggests that the sign-interpretant belongs to categories that are different than the sign-vehicle and the sign object.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both the sign-vehicle and the sign-object are actual<sub>2<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They both belong to secondness.&nbsp;&nbsp;This leaves the sign-interpretant encompassing both thirdness and firstness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, the sign-interpretant corresponds to the remaining categories on level n+1.&nbsp;&nbsp;The sign-interpretant consists of the normal context<sub>n+1<\/sub>&nbsp;and the potential<sub>n+1<\/sub>&nbsp;for the actuality<sub>n+1<\/sub>&nbsp;corresponding to the sign-object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0118 Here is a diagram of the general pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide26-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide26-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide26-4.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide26-4-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0119 I intend to apply this pattern to&nbsp;<em>the interscope of human subjectivity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, I cannot start with human subjectivity.&nbsp;&nbsp;I must start with southern apes walking in mixed forest and grasslands in Africa over two million years ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;The australopithecines walk.&nbsp;&nbsp;Their feet are enslaved and their hands are freed.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are about to be drawn into the niche of triadic relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can address one another with manual-brachial gestures.&nbsp;&nbsp;They pantomime.&nbsp;&nbsp;In doing so, they image and point to natural things and events.&nbsp;&nbsp;Their gestures are not words, yet.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, they join in nature&#8217;s broadcast of signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0120&nbsp;<em>Nature&#8217;s significations<\/em>&nbsp;decide&nbsp;<em>what is happening<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, I call them &#8220;interventional signs&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nature intervenes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nature&#8217;s significations draw our attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0121 The process proceeds as follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First,&nbsp;<em>things and events themselves<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SV<sub>i<\/sub>, sign-vehicle) stand for&nbsp;<em>sensations and feelings<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SO<sub>i<\/sub>, sign-object) in the normal context of&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SI<sub>i<\/sub>, sign-interpretant).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, these events and things<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;(SV<sub>i<\/sub>) have consequences.&nbsp;&nbsp;Consequences mean &#8216;something&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;(SI<sub>i<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;Roughly, &#8216;something&#8217; corresponds to&nbsp;<em>the meaning of a conjunction of sign-vehicle and sign-object<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0122 In sum,<em>&nbsp;nature&#8217;s broadcasts<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SV<sub>i<\/sub>) intervene to produce&nbsp;<em>a particular state of active body [substance] sensate soul<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>(SO<sub>i<\/sub>) that is bound by&nbsp;<em>the normal context of what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the possibility of &#8216;meaning&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SI<sub>i<\/sub>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0115 What is the structure of a sign?
