{"id":8349,"date":"2024-11-22T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8349"},"modified":"2024-06-29T13:29:42","modified_gmt":"2024-06-29T13:29:42","slug":"looking-at-daniel-houcks-book-2020-aquinas-original-sin-and-the-challenge-of-evolution-part-8-of-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8349","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Daniel Houck&#8217;s Book (2020) &#8220;Aquinas, Original Sin and the Challenge of Evolution&#8221; (Part 8 of 23)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0083 According to Houck, prelapsarian Adam could have lived under original justice<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;in two ways (A and B).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first way (A) is through natural original justice, offering three benefits (A1-A3).&nbsp;&nbsp;The first benefit (A1) is that prelapsarian Adam&#8217;s higher power of reason is subject to God.&nbsp;&nbsp;The second benefit (A2) is the soul&#8217;s lower powers are subject to reason.&nbsp;&nbsp;The third benefit (A3) is that the body is subjected to the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aquinas notes that these natural benefits are given to the human species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0084 In order to appreciate these natural benefits, I unfold the actionable judgment of original justice<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;into a category-based nested form.&nbsp;&nbsp;A judgment &#8220;unfolds&#8221; into a category-based nested form on the basis of assigned categories.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thirdness enters&nbsp;<em>the slot for normal context<sub>3<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Secondness goes to&nbsp;<em>actuality<sub>2<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Firstness becomes&nbsp;<em>possibility<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I label&nbsp;<em>the resulting category-based nested form<\/em>&nbsp;with the term, &#8220;commitment<sub>2c<\/sub>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide19-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide19-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide19-5.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide19-5-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0085 How does this cohere to&nbsp;<em>the scholastic insight into the natural benefits of original justice<sub>2c<\/sub>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First (A1), prelapsarian Adam&#8217;s higher power of reason associates to formal causation.&nbsp;&nbsp;Formal cause pertains to the normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;contextualizing the actuality<sub>2<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our holistic intellect<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;is characterized by God&#8217;s original justice.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our holistic intellect<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;harmonizes with intelligible phantasms<sub>2<\/sub>, but not with unintelligible phantasms<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second (A2), prelapsarian Adam&#8217;s soul (sensate and perceptive) are subject to reason.&nbsp;&nbsp;That is&nbsp;<em>reason,<\/em>&nbsp;not&nbsp;<em>philosophy,<\/em>because philosophy requires speech-alone talk.&nbsp;&nbsp;The reason of&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>&nbsp;practices&nbsp;<em>implicit abstraction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the second benefit goes with final causality.&nbsp;&nbsp;The entire nested form of commitment<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;is built into the human body and soul as adaptations to the potential of triadic relations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our sensations and feelings<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;must be attuned to recognize sign-vehicles from nature and from our own manual-brachial gestures.
