{"id":8334,"date":"2024-11-26T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8334"},"modified":"2024-06-29T13:20:34","modified_gmt":"2024-06-29T13:20:34","slug":"looking-at-daniel-houcks-book-2020-aquinas-original-sin-and-the-challenge-of-evolution-part-5-of-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8334","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Daniel Houck&#8217;s Book (2020) &#8220;Aquinas, Original Sin and the Challenge of Evolution&#8221; (Part 5 of 23)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0044 Ah, that brings me back to Houck&#8217;s book, which brings&nbsp;<em>Aquinas&#8217;s concept of original justice<\/em>&nbsp;out of its slumber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I look at&nbsp;<em>the elements that associate with primary cause for both the content and situation levels,<\/em>&nbsp;I see&nbsp;<em>original justice<\/em>at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The content level is preternatural.&nbsp;&nbsp;From the very start,&nbsp;<em>the human niche<\/em>&nbsp;is not about&nbsp;<em>some particular material feature of the environment of evolutionary adaptation<\/em>.&nbsp;<em>Triadic relations<\/em>&nbsp;constitute&nbsp;<em>an<\/em>&nbsp;<em>universal immaterial feature<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our sensations and feelings<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;are tuned to the signs of nature (rather than some material thing in nature).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation level is full of grace.&nbsp;&nbsp;Like water, grace may come in flavors. Is sanctification a flavor of grace?&nbsp;&nbsp;I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I do know that&nbsp;<em>the production of a phantasm<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>, where&nbsp;<em>the perceptive soul [informs] the reactive body<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>, requires synthesis, in addition to analysis.&nbsp;&nbsp;That explains why it<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is full of emotion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The reactive body<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;externalizes&nbsp;<em>what the perceptive soul<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;internalizes.&nbsp;&nbsp;That accounts for why the phantasm<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is subject to correction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Narrative<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;is a normal context that facilitates such synthesis and analysis.&nbsp;&nbsp;Clearly,&nbsp;<em>the Creation Story of Genesis<\/em>&nbsp;does not ask us to situate our origins using Aristotle&#8217;s four causes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rather,&nbsp;<em>chapter one of Genesis<\/em>&nbsp;calls us to imagine&nbsp;<em>a possibility<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our phantasms<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>snapshots of what we think is going on<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Imagination<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;labels&nbsp;<em>the potential of situating content<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture with a noteworthy title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide10-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide10-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8335\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0045 So,&nbsp;<em>Aquinas&#8217;s notion of original justice<\/em>&nbsp;is compelling, especially when it comes to&nbsp;<em>appreciating the Creation Story of Genesis as a sign of the evolutionary record<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original justice<sub>&nbsp;<\/sub>must occupy&nbsp;<em>a slot on the perspective level<sub>c<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original justice<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;is intimated in&nbsp;<em>the initial two-level interscope pictured above<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original justice<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;touches base&nbsp;<em>with primary causation<\/em>&nbsp;on the content and situation levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original justice<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;illuminates&nbsp;<em>the normal contexts<sub>3a,3b<\/sub>&nbsp;and the underlying possibilities<sub>1a,1b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0046 But, before I proceed to these topics, I want to step back and look at&nbsp;<em>the actualities<sub>2a,2b<\/sub>&nbsp;associated with secondary causation<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;These actualities compose&nbsp;<em>a model for the way that humans sensibly think, as they go about their daily lives, without paying attention to the perspective in which they operate<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I would go as far to say that humans do not evolve to directly represent&nbsp;<em>actualities such as original justice<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They evolve to live them<sub>2c<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in,<\/em>&nbsp;humans adapt to&nbsp;<em>the potential of triadic relations<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>, by constructing phantasms<sub>2b<\/sub>from sensations<sub>2a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those sensations<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;are stimulated by nature.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are also triggered by our own intentional manual brachial gestures<sub>2a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our sensations<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;are attuned to external and internal significations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our phantasms<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;construct internal objects, which our bodies react to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, when I encounter a turtle, my sensations and feelings construct an object,&nbsp;<em>hey, this will cook up nicely<\/em>, that causes my mouth to water.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, I gesture the words,&nbsp;<em>here turtle<\/em>, to a fellow teammate and my object<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;becomes intersubjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0047 In sum, the content- and situation-level actualities<sub>2a,2b<\/sub>&nbsp;represent&nbsp;<em>a portrait of the way humans are in the world<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phantasms<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;virtually situate sensations<sub>2a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide11-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" in&nbsp;<em>A Primer on The Individual in Community,<\/em>&nbsp;by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0048 Humans evolve to live in&nbsp;<em>original justice<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, we do not evolve to image or point to&nbsp;<em>this perspective-level actuality<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We evolve to live within it<sub>2c<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0049 I now want to explore&nbsp;<em>a picture of the human in the world<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It looks like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0050&nbsp;<em>What world<\/em>&nbsp;am I writing about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is this world,&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is this world,&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must be both, even though&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>&nbsp;is not&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0051 So, what is the difference between&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, the Biblical Creation Story tells me this.&nbsp;&nbsp;God declares that&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>&nbsp;is good.&nbsp;&nbsp;So the primary causes, which are now empty slots, touch base with original justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, once I pass Genesis 2:3, the Story of the Garden of Eden suggests that, with Adam&#8217;s rebellion, original justice is lost.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is just like a fairy tale, where an enchantment is lost, from one point of view, and insights are gained, from another point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0052 So, the normal contexts<sub>3a,3b<\/sub>&nbsp;and possibilities<sub>1a,1b<\/sub>&nbsp;are empty for a reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>, these actualities<sub>2a,2b<\/sub>&nbsp;address&nbsp;<em>hominins in the world<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>, these actualities<sub>2a,2b<\/sub>&nbsp;present&nbsp;<em>a picture of human subjectivity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0053 Human are sensible.&nbsp;&nbsp;They take the perspective level for granted.&nbsp;&nbsp;Only when the situation goes horribly wrong do humans question their perspective.&nbsp;&nbsp;Indeed,&nbsp;<em>our current capacity to question our perspective<\/em>&nbsp;suggests that our situation has already gone horribly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0054 So I ask, &#8220;What give rise to sensations<sub>2a<\/sub>?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sensations and feelings<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;emerge from (and situate)&nbsp;<em>the potential of &#8216;something&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;in the normal context of&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0055 What about phantasms<sub>2b<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotional responses<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;emerge from (and situate)&nbsp;<em>the potential of situating content<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(that is, our imagination<sub>1b<\/sub>) in the normal context of&nbsp;<em>what the content means to me<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0056 Here is&nbsp;<em>a picture of human subjectivity<\/em>&nbsp;(as opposed to&nbsp;<em>God&#8217;s subjectivity).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide13-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" in<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>associates to&nbsp;<em>original justice<\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em>Edenic tree of life<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>This sensible structure for human subjectivity<\/em>&nbsp;remains intact as it passes to&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, there is a difference between our originating and current Lebenswelts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first,&nbsp;<em>our hominin ancestors<\/em>&nbsp;live within&nbsp;<em>a perspective level that they cannot image or indicate with their hand (and later, hand-speech) talk<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the question arises concerning how our ancestors experience&nbsp;<em>the signs of an unnamable perspective-level actuality<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the latter, we have a way of talking, speech-alone talk, that is primarily symbolic.&nbsp;&nbsp;Consequently, we can explicitly abstract and label&nbsp;<em>the elements of our perspective-level actuality<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Uh-oh.&nbsp;&nbsp;Does that suggest that we can generate our own perspective-level actualities, that don&#8217;t even come close to the originating&nbsp;<em>original justice<sub>2c<\/sub>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0058 With that question left on the table like an apparently dead turtle, allow me to introduce a picture of the content and situation levels along with&nbsp;<em>the currently obscured perspective level for human subjectivity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a
