If I look back at the first nested form,&nbsp;<em>Aristotle&#8217;s instrumental, material, final and formal causes<\/em>&nbsp;allow me to pass from secondary to primary causes (that is, from actuality to understanding).&nbsp;&nbsp;Understanding comes at the moment that I comprehend an entire triadic relation.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, I have&nbsp;<em>the possibility of being an image of God<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and I have&nbsp;<em>the capacity to recognize triadic relations<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;One potential appears in&nbsp;<em>the first chapter of Genesis<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The other potential corresponds to&nbsp;<em>the human as a semiotic animal<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Material and instrumental causes demystify the content level.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the normal context of an evolutionary paradigm<sub>3a<\/sub>, our&nbsp;<em>active bodies [substance] sensate souls<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;come into relation with&nbsp;<em>the potential of triadic relations<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>, the human niche<sub>1a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The human niche<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>what hominins ultimately adapt to<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;In doing so, our ancestors increasingly image God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, the human niche<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the potential of triadic relations<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Aristotle&#8217;s instrumental and material causes<\/em>&nbsp;can start with the same actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;that serves as a first approximation for the creation of humans in Genesis and produce&nbsp;<em>a content-level nested form more palatable to modern biologists (who study nature as if primary causes are not relevant)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0033 Here is a picture of what happens when I apply Aristotle&#8217;s four causes to the dyadic actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<em>active body [substance] sensate soul<\/em>&nbsp;with the intent (final cause) of pleasing biologists and with a formalism (formal cause) compatible with science.&nbsp;&nbsp;Remember, for scientists, the positivist intellect has a rule that says, &#8220;No metaphysics&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This content-level nested form appears free of that superstitious nonsense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide06-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide06-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide06-5.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide06-5-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But, aren&#8217;t Aristotle&#8217;s four causes superstitious nonsense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uh-oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The content-level potential<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;shifts from&nbsp;<em>the possibilities inherent in the image of God<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>the human niche<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;A niche<sub>1a<\/sub>is&nbsp;<em>the potential of an actuality that is independent of the adapting species<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;For humans, that actuality is triadic relations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Triadic relations give us&nbsp;<em>the potential to be images of God<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;That potential is&nbsp;<em>the human niche<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0034 In regards to the content-level actuality<sub>2a<\/sub>, I will, on occasion, compress our sensations and feelings<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;into one word, &#8220;sensations<sub>2a<\/sub>&#8220;, in order to refer to&nbsp;<em>the content-level actuality<\/em>&nbsp;in future diagrams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does this mean for&nbsp;<em>the first approximation to body [substantiates] soul?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first approximation is&nbsp;<em>active body [substantiates] sensate soul<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, there must be a second approximation, corresponding to a situation-level actuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, there is a second, situation-level hylomorphe<sub>2b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The situation-level normal context<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;should complement the content-level normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This type of differentiation reflects a dichotomy familiar to modern academics, &#8220;the department of arts and sciences&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The arts situate the sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0035 Here, Aristotle&#8217;s four causes offer a way to clarify the content level, directly, and the situation level, indirectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could say that Aristotle&#8217;s four causes hold&nbsp;<em>the potential to situate the content level<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>. That would be correct.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, not complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aristotle&#8217;s four causes, as brilliant as they are, do not offer the only way to situate content.&nbsp;&nbsp;Indeed,&nbsp;<em>my use of the four causes in refining the original nested form<\/em>&nbsp;is anything but standard.&nbsp;&nbsp;I already mentioned that the four elements work in the same manner.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are also paths to situate content-level actualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding requires us to figure out the normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;that attends to any encountered, sensed and felt actuality<sub>2<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Civilized humans have devised many ways to accomplish this task, with varying degrees of success.&nbsp;&nbsp;The process is synthetic, rather than analytical.&nbsp;&nbsp;Consequently,&nbsp;<em>the actuality<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;that virtually situates&nbsp;<em>sensations<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;can be pretty crazy, but at least it<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;presents&nbsp;<em>the subjective sensation<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>an object that may later become intersubjective<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, here is how the original nested form starts to differentiate into a two-level interscope<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide07-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide07-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide07-5.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide07-5-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0036 I now consider the nature of the situation-level actuality<sub>2b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A human, like an animal, can be described as a hylomorphe,&nbsp;<em>body [substantiates] soul<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, an old, traditional word, &#8220;substance&#8221;, gains a new technical meaning.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Substance&#8221; grounds&nbsp;<em>the contiguity between any two real elements in Peirce&#8217;s category of secondness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;In this use, the distinction between noun and verb dissipates.&nbsp;&nbsp;The contiguity is both noun and verb, just like the word, &#8220;glue&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0037 As it turns out, for humans,&nbsp;<em>body [substantiates] soul<\/em>&nbsp;is not equivalent to its commutation,&nbsp;<em>soul [is substantiated by] body<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I already appreciate this with the content-level hylomorphe,&nbsp;<em>active body [substantiates] sensate soul<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>, suggesting that the situation-level actuality is the commutation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0038 Here is&nbsp;<em>a picture of the differentiation of the original hylomorphe<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide08-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide08-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide08-5.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide08-5-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0039 What is&nbsp;<em>the reactive body?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the seat of the emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there a name for&nbsp;<em>the perceptive soul [informs] the reactive body<sub>2b<\/sub>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, it<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is called a &#8220;phantasm&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Perceptive soul [informs] reactive body<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;virtually (not directly) emerges from (and situates)<em>&nbsp;active body [substantiates] sensate soul<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Phantasm<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;virtually (not directly) emerges from (and situates)<em>&nbsp;sensations<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0040 At this point,&nbsp;<em>a final cause for the original nested form<\/em>&nbsp;(of primary and secondary causation) comes into view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The normal context of the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>&nbsp;(revealed by Genesis One)<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;brings&nbsp;<em>the actuality of body [substance] soul<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;<\/em>into relation with&nbsp;<em>the potential of the descriptor, &#8220;image of God&#8221;<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0041 The final cause is&nbsp;<em>the purpose, the goal and the end of the original nested form<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Final causes entangle primary and secondary causations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The formal cause harmonizes the normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and actuality<sub>2<\/sub>, suggesting that&nbsp;<em>the Creation Story<\/em>&nbsp;puts&nbsp;<em>the human body and mind<\/em>&nbsp;into context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same final causes apply to&nbsp;<em>the content-level nested form<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The normal context of scientific inquiry into evolution<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;brings&nbsp;<em>the actuality of the active body [substance] sensate soul<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>into relation with&nbsp;<em>the human niche<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final cause says that the human body and mind<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;situates the potential of triadic relations (such as sign-relations)<sub>1a<\/sub>within an evolutionary framework<sub>3a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The problem faced by evolutionary anthropologists is&nbsp;<em>the troubling reality<\/em>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<em>triadic relations<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>immaterial beings<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, they<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>immaterial beings<\/em>&nbsp;that entangle&nbsp;<em>material and instrumental causes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the difficulty.&nbsp;&nbsp;For scientists, the formal cause, the harmonization of the evolutionary paradigm<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and the human body and mind<sub>2a<\/sub>, should not break the rule of the positivist intellect.&nbsp;&nbsp;Metaphysics is not allowed.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, metaphysics is required when the human niche<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;is the potential of triadic relations<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0042 So, the original actuality of&nbsp;<em>body [substance] soul<\/em>&nbsp;differentiates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sensations<sub>2a<\/sub>&#8221;
