Can I replace the content-level potential<\/em> with the noun, “agreeability”?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The normal context of everyday conversation<\/em> (as well as anything approaching conversation)3a<\/sub> brings the actuality of spoken words<\/em> [framing and priming] reference2a<\/sub><\/em> into relation with the potential of agreeability1a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1021 So, the content-level question, “What is happening?”3a<\/sub>, is answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The potential of ‘something’ happening1a<\/sub><\/em> is also addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1022 Speaking of ‘something happening1a<\/sub>,<\/em> I wonder, “What question does the potential of agreeability always avoid?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1023 Does Eve ask the serpent, “Why would you lie to me?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, if she did, would the serpent have replied, “Why are you so disagreeable, today?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This brings me to the second header in the title of chapter eight:<\/em> Wittgenstein’s rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1024 Wittgenstein’s rule is deceptively straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A speaker’s statement<\/em> may tell the listener more about the speaker<\/em> than what the speaker is talking about<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if the speaker’s motives are nefarious, then what the speaker is talking about<\/em> could be misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1025 Why is Wittgenstein’s rule deceptively straightforward?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s like telling someone that the way to get from the house to the bakery<\/em> is to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People don’t fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1026 Here is the Russell conjugation-inspired Greimas square<\/em> for an argument between I<\/em> (A) and you<\/em> (B) that is being watched and reported on by he<\/em> (C).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, how does Wittgenstein’s rule fit into this picture?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, it fits in as the contrary of D<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1027 Here is another example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the introduction, Enfield mentions the sad tale of primatologist, who becomes a research scientist during the heyday of behavioralism.  The behavioralist treats the subject of inquiry<\/em> as a black box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea is to scientifically control the input that an animal receives and observe the animal’s behavior in response to the researcher introducing controlled input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to study mother-newborn bonding in an animal model,<\/em> this researcher follows a protocol that separates a newborn rhesus monkey from its mother and places it in an enclosure where inputs can be rigorously monitored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does this for years because behavioralists say that the results of these types of stimulus-response experiments<\/em> will advance scientific understanding<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1028 Of course, the primate scientist agrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

1029 Where does Wittgenstein’s rule<\/em> fit into this picture?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, it fits in only insofar as its violation<\/em> explains the researcher’s inability to notice1b<\/sub> that all the rhesus monkeys under investigation<\/em> are suffering horribly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, without the primatologist even knowing it, the researcher’s publications<\/em> tell us more about the agreeability1a<\/sub> of the scientist<\/em> than the actual results that are contained in the publications<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1030 Uh, I suppose that the last sentence restates Wittgenstein’s rule<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1031 Which only goes to show the value that this examination adds<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have demonstrated that, since we evolved to be agreeable1a<\/sub>, we are unable to follow Wittgenstein’s rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1032 But, there is a bright side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After our inability to follow Wittgenstein’s rule<\/em> leads to a nightmare so horrible that we could not have foreseen it, a Gestalt switch gets thrown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
