Enfield&#8217;s Book (2022) &#8220;Language vs. Reality&#8221; (Part 5 of 23)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0883 Here is a diagram of the three-level interscope for the ongoing example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide12-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide12-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide12-4.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide12-4-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0884 At this point in chapter one, I hover right above figure 1.2, where the author introduces the electromagnetic spectrum in order to show that&nbsp;<em>human construction of reality<\/em>&nbsp;involves&nbsp;<em>simplification<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction of brute reality simplifies physical reality.&nbsp;&nbsp;It does so through (what appears to be) a sign-relation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>A particular cloud<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(sign-vehicle) stands for the&nbsp;<em>storm and cold<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(sign-object) in regards to&nbsp;<em>autumn weather<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;<\/em>(sign-interpretant).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction of social reality also simplifies.&nbsp;&nbsp;It does through a (slightly different) sign-relation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>An upcoming cold front<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(sign-vehicle) stands for&nbsp;<em>our need to get back home, pronto<sub>2b<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;(sign-object) in regards to&nbsp;<em>our team<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and what not getting back means to each one of us<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(sign-interpretant).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0885 These signs-relations are not exactly the same.&nbsp;&nbsp;More work will follow.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, for now, they seem to follow Enfield&#8217;s proposal that&nbsp;<em>my senses simplify the physical<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>my perceptions simplify the social<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;There are two filters.&nbsp;&nbsp;There are two simplifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I notice that&nbsp;<em>the perspective-level actuality<\/em>&nbsp;precisely expresses&nbsp;<em>the hylomorphic structure of Peirce&#8217;s category of secondness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Secondness consists of&nbsp;<em>two contiguous real elements<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>One way to portray secondness<\/em>&nbsp;is as&nbsp;<em>a hylomorphic structure,<\/em>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<em>two real elements<\/em>&nbsp;(such as &#8220;<em>matter<\/em>&#8221;
