{"id":8098,"date":"2024-09-27T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8098"},"modified":"2024-06-25T18:10:31","modified_gmt":"2024-06-25T18:10:31","slug":"looking-at-michelle-stiless-book-2022-one-idea-to-rule-them-all-part-3-of-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=8098","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Michelle Stiles&#8217;s Book (2022) &#8220;One Idea to Rule Them All&#8221; (Part 3 of 23)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0527 Creel and his associates support&nbsp;<em>presentations of propaganda<\/em>&nbsp;at locations where crowds gather and people are vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The so-called &#8220;four-minute men&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;engage an audience in&nbsp;<em>a film theater&nbsp;<\/em>during&nbsp;<em>the four-minutes that it takes to change a reel of film<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;These four-minute men testify to our patriotic duty and to our need to enter the European war.&nbsp;&nbsp;The presumption is that&nbsp;<em>what the four-minute man is willing to say [objectifies] what the orator thinks<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, that is not honestly the case, since the four-minute presenter knows that he is&nbsp;<em>a mouthpiece [that cannot truly objectify] the slogan that America can, and will, end war, itself<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0528 The venue for such presentations is cleverly chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Practically, there can be no debate, since the films must go on.&nbsp;&nbsp;People come to see the films.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, only&nbsp;<em>the time between reels<\/em>&nbsp;is available for a testimonial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theoretically, each theater has no perspective other than the venue itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;Similarly,&nbsp;<em>each battle among enlightenment gods<\/em>&nbsp;has no perspective other than itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;Likewise, the relativist one<sub>3c<\/sub>&nbsp;represents no perspective other than itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0529&nbsp;<em>This loss of perspective<\/em>&nbsp;parallels the slogan, popularized in the modern era, of &#8220;art for art&#8217;s sake&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Art has no perspective other than the venue itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;Consequently,&nbsp;<em>official displays of artistic works<\/em>&nbsp;defines&nbsp;<em>what &#8220;art&#8221; is,<\/em>&nbsp;not on the basis of some sort of criteria or aesthetic, but on the basis of&nbsp;<em>a gallery or a museum acting as an interventional sign-object<\/em>(SO<sub>i<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is&nbsp;<em>the way of the interventional sign-relation,<\/em>&nbsp;if there is&nbsp;<em>a content-level sign-object<\/em>&nbsp;(an art gallery or museum) that can be witnessed, then there must be&nbsp;<em>a perspective-level sign-vehicle<\/em>&nbsp;(corresponding to &#8220;art&#8221; as a transcendental value) that cannot be witnessed.&nbsp;&nbsp;The interventional sign-vehicle must be inferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If SO<sub>i<\/sub>, then SV<sub>i<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not logic.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is&nbsp;<em>the nature of the interventional sign-relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0530 Here is a difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since&nbsp;<em>the audiences of the four-minute men<\/em>&nbsp;are at the film theater in order to entertained by moving pictures (which are obviously illusions), why would they take seriously&nbsp;<em>anything said by an orator speaking between reels?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0531 One answer may be that&nbsp;<em>the purely relational structure of the interventional sign-relation<\/em>&nbsp;is built into the hominin mind.&nbsp;&nbsp;It may be an adaptation to hand-talk in&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, hand-talk itself is a key adaptation to teams (at first) and communities (after the domestication of fire).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why not imagine that&nbsp;<em>everything that we subjectively witness<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the hand-talk of a supra-subjective presence?<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;Why not imagine that&nbsp;<em>a supra-subjective presence<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SV<sub>i<\/sub>) stands for&nbsp;<em>whatever we think and talk about<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SO<sub>i<\/sub>) in regards to&nbsp;<em>a normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and a potential<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;that each hominin exhibits<\/em>&nbsp;(when engaged in team and community collaborative activities) (SI<sub>i<\/sub>)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, since hand-talk does not facilitate explicit abstraction, why not imagine that&nbsp;<em>the interventional sign-relation<\/em>&nbsp;is built into&nbsp;<em>what we evolved to be?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0532 Only after the first singularity, with&nbsp;<em>the ability of purely symbolic speech-alone talk<\/em>&nbsp;to label&nbsp;<em>anything<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>everything,<\/em>can we break down the interventional sign-interpretant (SI<sub>i<\/sub>) into&nbsp;<em>a content-level normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>. Plus, we can associate these two elements to&nbsp;<em>intellect<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and<em>&nbsp;will<sub>1a<\/sub>,&nbsp;<\/em>respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;Steve Fuller notes that &#8220;reason<sub>3a,1a<\/sub>&#8221; consists of both intellect and will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0533 Even&nbsp;<em>in our current Lebenswelt,<\/em>&nbsp;we tune into&nbsp;<em>the interventional sign-relation,&nbsp;<\/em>even when we go to the film theater with our dates.&nbsp;&nbsp;As already mentioned,&nbsp;<em>the theory behind theater<\/em>&nbsp;is that there is&nbsp;<em>no hidden agenda behind the theater<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The theater denies any supra-subjective being<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;that otherwise might be present.&nbsp;&nbsp;I mean, it&#8217;s not like church, where a supra-subjective presence<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;is palpable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>No hidden agenda<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SV<sub>i<\/sub>) stands for&nbsp;<em>my entertainment while attending theater<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SO<sub>i<\/sub>) in regards to&nbsp;<em>reason<sub>3a,1a<\/sub>, defined as my intellect<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;contextualizing my will<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SI<sub>i<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide09-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide09-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8099\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide09-3.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide09-3-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0534 So, what happens when&nbsp;<em>one of Creel&#8217;s four-minute men<\/em>&nbsp;takes the stage while the staff changes reels?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The interventional sign-relation<\/em>&nbsp;changes subtly, from&nbsp;<em>passively processing images that do not pertain to me<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>actively processing talk that recalls that I belong to teams and communities<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0535 Yes, the four-minute audience feels&nbsp;<em>the actualization of an interventional sign-relation,<\/em>&nbsp;where&nbsp;<em>a suprasubjective judgment to go to war<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SV<sub>i<\/sub>) stands for&nbsp;<em>the four-minute orator&#8217;s words<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SO<sub>i<\/sub>) in regards to&nbsp;<em>&#8220;our&#8221; reason<sub>3a,1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SI<sub>i<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A technical word for this actualization is coined by French Marxist theorist, Louis Althusser (1918-1990 AD).&nbsp;&nbsp;The word is &#8220;interpellation&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Interpellation plays a role in&nbsp;<em>A Primer on How Institutions Think<\/em>&nbsp;(by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0536&nbsp;<em>The four-minute man<\/em>&nbsp;offers&nbsp;<em>a way to fill in the terms<\/em>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<em>the content-level for the scrappy player level<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many take the bait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide10-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide10-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide10-3.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Slide10-3-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as a member of the audience takes the bait, there is a catharsis.&nbsp;&nbsp;My agreement with&nbsp;<em>the four-minute man [can be objectified by] what I say<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;We&#8221; agree with&nbsp;<em>the will<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;of the four-minute man<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0537 So, my conclusion may sound a little bit theological.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not about truth.&nbsp;&nbsp;The orator&#8217;s announcement of&nbsp;<em>the coming of the kingdom of Woodrow Wilson&#8217;s Committee on Public Information<\/em>&nbsp;offers a way to fill in&nbsp;<em>the empty elements on the scrappy player level<\/em>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<em>specific food for thought<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;We can enter the Great War.&nbsp;&nbsp;We can call it&nbsp;<em>A War To End All Wars<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Aspiration becomes inspiration.&nbsp;&nbsp;Inspiration leads to collective action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0527 Creel and his associates support&nbsp;presentations of propaganda&nbsp;at locations where crowds gather and people are vulnerable.
