If the reader feels a twinge of discomfort, take a look around.  Evidence abounds.  Consider Looking at Sam Smith and Kim Petras’s Music Video (2022) “Unholy”<\/em> (appearing in Razie Mah’s blog on February 11, 2023).  Who is the woman in white?<\/em>  What does her choice at the end of the video<\/em> imply?  Cutting edge artists<\/em> portray submission to the empirio-normative judgment2c<\/sub><\/em> as something to be applauded<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0228 Fuller tells a story, starting with Francis Bacon (1561-1626 AD), who serves as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor under King James I.  This story serves as an interventional sign-object (SOi<\/sub>) that implicates an interventional sign-interpretant (SIi<\/sub>) and that implication suggests the presence of an interventional sign-vehicle (SVi<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, that opens the possibility of cogitating the interventional sign-relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0230 Hand talk relies on icons and indexes.  Icons (like pantomime) picture their referents.  Indexes (like pointing) indicate their referents.  The referent always precedes the gesture-word.  In a sense, the iconicity and indexality of hand-talk words<\/em> guarantee reference<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gesture-word<\/em> is a specifying sign<\/em>.  The gesture word<\/em> (SVs<\/sub>) specifies its referent<\/em> (SOs<\/sub>) in regards to what the statement means to me<\/em> operating on the potential of situating the decoded content<\/em> (SIs<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0231 But what of the referent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the referent<\/em> itself <\/em>also a gesture-word, <\/em>signed by the one who signifies, without us knowing why?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If so, then the referent2a<\/sub> itself<\/em>  (or what I am thinking about the referent2a<\/sub><\/em>) may be a sign-object<\/em> (SOi<\/sub>) that must have an interpretant<\/em> (SIi<\/sub>).   That SIi<\/sub> more or less corresponds to the answer to the question, “What is happening3a<\/sub>“, operating on the possibility that ‘something’ is happening1a<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, if the referent2a<\/sub> of a hand-talk word itself<\/em> is an interventional sign-object<\/em> (SOi<\/sub>), then where is the interventional sign-vehicle<\/em> (SVi<\/sub>)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cannot see, hear, smell, taste or touch it, but I know that it is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0232 In other words, the gesture-word<\/em> (say, MOON) already has a referent,<\/em> the moon that can be pictured or pointed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the moon itself<\/em> like a hand-talk word?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If so, then who gestures it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once hand talk becomes linguistic, counter-intuitive, grammatically correct statements<\/em> can address this question<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0234 So, an awareness of the interventional sign-relation<\/em> is a hominin adaptation to the nature of sign-relations<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
