(Part 10 of 21)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0728 Chapter four of&nbsp;<em>Theistic Evolution<\/em>&nbsp;introduces&nbsp;<em>Aquinas&#8217;s account of creation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this chapter, Tabaczek completely fills the plate with theology<sup>agent<\/sup>&nbsp;(B1) material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is like eating an enormous meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know what happens 18 hours later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes me wonder, &#8220;Is Tabaczek (B1) aiming to take an enormous crap on the mirror of science (C2)?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, is he going to name that steaming pile, &#8220;Evolution and Creation&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I cannot help thinking this as I sit down to dine on Aquinas&#8217;s account of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0729 Oh, yes, the appetizer is delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabaczek knows this material like the back of his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aquinas intends to cook Augustine&#8217;s proto-evolutionary concept of&nbsp;<em>rationes seminales<\/em>&nbsp;into a dish of intellectual sumptuousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0730 Rationes seminales?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Rationes&#8221; translates as &#8220;principle&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Seminales&#8221; translates as &#8220;seed&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this technical term may be formulated as a hylomorphe.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the term belongs to the realm of actuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide269.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide269.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide269.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide269-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0731 Augustine introduces the term in his commentary on Genesis 1 and 2, roughly titled&nbsp;<em>On the Not Allegorical and More or Less Metaphorical Interpretation of Genesis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, that is a long title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn&#8217;t there a better word for &#8220;not allegorical and more or less metaphorical&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How about the word, &#8220;literal&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Literal&#8221; makes for a shorter title, for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let me call Augustine&#8217;s book, &#8220;On the Literal Interpretation of Genesis&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0732 In order to understand the term,&nbsp;<em>rationes seminales,<\/em>&nbsp;I put it<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;in a category-based nested form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0733 Right away, I think of the normal context of an oak.&nbsp;&nbsp;I can compare an acorn to an oak tree?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, an acorn exemplifies a seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, does a tree exemplify a principle, in the same way that a tree manifests a form?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, what if Augustine&#8217;s &#8220;seed&#8221; is not an acorn?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, it may be a metaphor for&nbsp;<em>what an acorn does<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An acorn germinates and knits together a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0734 This brings me to a difficult topic, because the seed does not correspond to matter, in the same way that bronze corresponds to matter when the form is a statue.&nbsp;&nbsp;The seed represents&nbsp;<em>a relational being that entangles matter&#8230; or realness&#8230; in the process of substantiating a form<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Latin word for &#8220;being itself&#8221; is&nbsp;<em>ens<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Latin term for &#8220;matter substantiating&#8221; is&nbsp;<em>esse<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes me wonder whether there is a Latin word for &#8220;being substantiating&#8221;, where being,&nbsp;<em>ens,<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>purely relational,<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>relational with a small entanglement of matter?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hmmm.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Latin term is still&nbsp;<em>esse<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0735 Well, that is good enough for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is&nbsp;<em>my metaphor for rationes seminales<\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>an actuality in a nested form<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide270.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide270.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide270.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide270-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The seed, &#8220;<em>seminales<\/em>&#8220;, reminds me of&nbsp;<em>the way DNA gives rise to a phenotype<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is primarily a relational structure, a &#8220;code&#8221; to the geneticist, that makes&nbsp;<em>that particular normal context<sub>3<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;exclusive.&nbsp;&nbsp;This association implies that&nbsp;<em>each species of tree<\/em>&nbsp;contains its own seed.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, the seed gives a species its&nbsp;<em>esse_ce<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The principle, &#8220;<em>rationes<\/em>&#8220;, reminds me of&nbsp;<em>the way that a living form adapts to an actuality independent of the adapting species<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is like&nbsp;<em>an idea that solves a problem<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The challenge is either dangerous (like a predator) or beneficial (like the nectar of a flower).&nbsp;&nbsp;To the extent that the idea works, the species thrives.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>&#8220;Rationes&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;gives a species its&nbsp;<em>essence<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0736 So, now I make&nbsp;<em>a substitution<\/em>&nbsp;that translates&nbsp;<em>Augustine&#8217;s term<\/em>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<em>a seemingly more familiar (yet really unfamiliar) hylomorphe<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This hylomorphe is not&nbsp;<em>the contiguity between matter and form<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This hylomorphe is&nbsp;<em>a metaphorical actuality<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, if esse_ce is&nbsp;<em>matter [substantiating]<\/em>&nbsp;and essence is&nbsp;<em>[substantiating] form,<\/em>&nbsp;then&nbsp;<em>what would be the contiguity between esse_ce and essence?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would it be&nbsp;<em>a substance within substance?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide271.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide271.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide271.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide271-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0737 When Tabaczek discusses&nbsp;<em>the idea of exemplars in the mind of God,<\/em>&nbsp;each animal or plant is&nbsp;<em>a manifestation of an exemplar<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Augustine&#8217;s notion of&nbsp;<em>rationes seminales<\/em>&nbsp;applies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Rationes seminales<\/em>&nbsp;enters into&nbsp;<em>the exemplar<\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>esse_ce [contiguity] essence<sub>2<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>the normal context of each species<sub>3<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the potential that each member of the species is capable of developing<\/em>&nbsp;(due to DNA)&nbsp;<em>and thriving<\/em>&nbsp;(due to its suitability for the environment of evolutionary adaptation or an AIAS)<sub>1<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0738 On top of that,&nbsp;<em>the interventional sign-relation<\/em>&nbsp;allows me to depict how&nbsp;<em>my recognition of a particular species<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>serves as a sign-object (SO<sub>i<\/sub>) that testifies to a sign-vehicle (SV<sub>i<\/sub>), the corresponding exemplar in the mind of God<sub>2c<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following figure appears in the section on Interscopes and Sign-Relations (points 0335-0425).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide272.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide272.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide272.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide272-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0728 Chapter four of&nbsp;Theistic Evolution&nbsp;introduces&nbsp;Aquinas&#8217;s account of creation.
