(Part 9 of 21)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0721 Chapter three concerns natural selection, teleology and chance in evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surely, that sounds like&nbsp;<em>the natural history side of the NeoDarwinian intersection<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0722 Of course,&nbsp;<em>the potentials<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;of the environment of evolutionary adaptation<\/em>&nbsp;(EEA<sub>2a<\/sub>, also the actuality independent of the adapting species, AIAS<sub>2a<\/sub>) involve both tychism (blind material and instrumental necessity) and chance (blind happenstance).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know what you are thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please, do not ask me what tychism and chance have in common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0723 I am sure that&nbsp;<em>some sort of image of that request<\/em>&nbsp;appears in theology<sup>mirror<\/sup>&nbsp;(D).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, the chapter starts with theology<sup>agent<\/sup>&nbsp;(B).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of&nbsp;<em>the start of Tabaczek&#8217;s discussion<\/em>&nbsp;<em>about tychism and chance<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide265.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide265.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide265.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide265-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0724 As soon as the author raises the question as an agent of theology (B1), an image appears in the mirror of science (C2).&nbsp;&nbsp;The image consists of&nbsp;<em>a question that either accuses or absolves Darwin of undermining the traditional Aristotelian concept of final causation<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The entire image is sort of foggy, because every answer seems to be correct and incorrect at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately,&nbsp;<em>the key answer<\/em>&nbsp;for theistic (C) evolution (A) is&nbsp;<em>what the agent of science says<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The evolutionary biologist (A) says that natural selection itself is not goal directed.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, goal-directedness can be adaptive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide266.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide266.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide266.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide266-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0725 Uh oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that is the case, then what should I expect to see in the mirror of science (D)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something that does not quite make sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide267.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide267.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide267.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide267-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0726 Of course,&nbsp;<em>the scientist&#8217;s affirmation that there is no teleology to natural selection<\/em>&nbsp;(A3) is reflected in the mirror of science (D4).&nbsp;&nbsp;Natural selection offers a picture of something blind.&nbsp;&nbsp;Oh, correction.&nbsp;&nbsp;Two blind somethings.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, both are associated with&nbsp;<em>model [disciplinary language] observations and measurements<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does that imply that&nbsp;<em>both models and observations in evolutionary biology<\/em>&nbsp;lack purpose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nature needs to have foresight, at most, and vision, at least, in order to formulate a final cause.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nature has no such foresight or vision.&nbsp;&nbsp;It only has those two blind whatevers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, Aristotle&#8217;s four causes are intrinsic to every category-based nested form, including the situation-level nested form for the discipline of natural history&#8230;
