(Part 3 of 21)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0670 Here comes application three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In chapter one, just as science (A) projects its own image onto the mirror of theology (D), Tabaczek (B) casts the image of Thomistic metaphysics into the science<sup>mirror<\/sup>&nbsp;of evolutionary transitions (C).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder, &#8220;What will come of that?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide239.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide239.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide239.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide239-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0671 According to Aristotle, things have&nbsp;<em>hylomorphic structure<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me,&nbsp;<em>Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>an exemplar for Peirce&#8217;s category of secondness<\/em>&nbsp;(points 0611 to 0640).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leads to a problem with nomenclature.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>My portrayal of the hylomorphe<\/em>&nbsp;is precisely&nbsp;<em>the opposite of Tabaczek&#8217;s portrayal<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not &#8220;opposite&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rather &#8220;upside-down&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide240.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide240.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide240.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide240-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0672 Am I playing a word game?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the difference between&nbsp;<em>a thing as itself<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>a hylomorphe?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A thing itself<\/em>&nbsp;is mind-independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A thing as hylomorphe<\/em>&nbsp;is mind-dependent.&nbsp;&nbsp;When a human encounters a thing, the thing has two contiguous real elements, roughly corresponding to presence and shape.&nbsp;&nbsp;This precisely corresponds to&nbsp;<em>Peirce&#8217;s definition of the category of secondness, the realm of actuality<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0673 As long as humans use spoken words as labels, we can draw&nbsp;<em>a distinction<\/em>&nbsp;between&nbsp;<em>these two facets of a single thing<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, for&nbsp;<em>the longest time,<\/em>&nbsp;our hominin ancestors practice&nbsp;<em>hand- and hand-speech talk,<\/em>&nbsp;which is unable to explicitly abstract&nbsp;<em>these two real elements<\/em>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<em>the thing itself<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;One can pantomime and point to&nbsp;<em>the thing itself<\/em>&nbsp;(or one of its features).&nbsp;&nbsp;But, one cannot image or indicate&nbsp;<em>its matter<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>its form<\/em>&nbsp;separately.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nevertheless, one can be aware that&nbsp;<em>the thing itself<\/em>&nbsp;has presence and has shape.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, it may be weird to say this, but&nbsp;<em>the difference between matter and form<\/em>&nbsp;is built into&nbsp;<em>our bodies and our souls<\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>an implicit abstraction,<\/em>&nbsp;rather than as&nbsp;<em>an explicit abstraction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes,&nbsp;<em>the implicit abstraction of matter and form<\/em>&nbsp;is a feature of&nbsp;<em>our phenotype<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is&nbsp;<em>an adaptation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0674 Because humans intuitively respond to things as&nbsp;<em>matter and form,<\/em>&nbsp;roughly&nbsp;<em>presence and shape,<\/em>&nbsp;then Tabaczek (B1) may reasonably expect that&nbsp;<em>the evolution of creatures,<\/em>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>the evolution of {matter and form}<\/em>, might offer&nbsp;<em>an acceptable image of evolutionary transitions<\/em>&nbsp;(C2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0675 Well, forget that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where do&nbsp;<em>hylomorphes<\/em>&nbsp;fit into&nbsp;<em>the disciplinary languages<\/em>&nbsp;of either natural history or genetics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is matter&nbsp;<em>an actuality independent of the adaptive species<\/em>&nbsp;(AIAS), such as&nbsp;<em>the environment of evolutionary adaptation<\/em>(EEA)?&nbsp;&nbsp;Is&nbsp;<em>form<\/em>&nbsp;an adaptation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is&nbsp;<em>matter<\/em>&nbsp;DNA?&nbsp;&nbsp;Is&nbsp;<em>form<\/em>&nbsp;the phenotype?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Well, yes,&#8221; I say, &#8220;to all these questions, and I also may add that hylomorphes, such as&nbsp;<em>matter [contiguity] form,<\/em>&nbsp;also associate to observations of phenomena, where the observation intuitively produces&nbsp;<em>a hylomorphe<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The science<sup>agent<\/sup>&nbsp;(A3) replies, &#8220;I sure wish the positivist intellect was still alive.&nbsp;&nbsp;This metaphysics business is not for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0670 Here comes application three.
