These four elements conform to a purely relational structure called the Greimas square<\/em>.  The Greimas square<\/em> is useful for appreciating the nature of spoken words<\/em> as placeholders in a system of differences<\/em>.  How so?  The Greimas square is a system of differences, following specific rules, and providing useful insight when the rules are followed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

0660 Here are the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The focus is A.  A corresponds to scienceagent<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B contrasts with A.  B corresponds to theologyagent<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C stands against B.  Here, sciencemirror<\/sup> stands as an image of how the theologyagent<\/sup> sees himself or herself in um… the mirror of science<\/em>.  Plus, C complements A, in so far as scienceagent<\/sup> can see what is in sciencemirror<\/sup><\/em>.  This will be confusing, since sciencemirror<\/sup> (C) reflects theologyagent<\/sup> (B).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D contrasts with C.  Theologymirror<\/sup> contrasts with sciencemirror<\/sup>.  Plus, D stands against A, in so far as theologymirror <\/sup>stands as an image of how scienceagent<\/sup> sees himself or herself in (I suspect that this sounds redundant) the mirror of theology<\/em>.  Also, D complements B, in so far as theologyagent <\/sup>can see what is in the mirror of theology<\/em>.  So, remember, theologymirror<\/sup> (D) reflects scienceagent<\/sup> (A).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0663 The scienceagent<\/sup> (A1) knows that his side of Tabaczek’s mirror is real, corresponding to what ought to be<\/em> for the former Positivist’s judgment.  Models are more real than noumena, the things themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the agent of science<\/em> (A1) looks into the mirror of theology<\/em> (D2), he sees what is<\/em> for the former Positivist’s judgment (D2).  To him, this is a distorted image of himself, as a scientist who studies phenomena<\/em> (D2).  But, to the theologyagent<\/sup> (B3) this is a clever way to bundle metaphysics into the noumenon, allowing scientists to observe and measure phenomena unhindered<\/em>.  Or, should I say, “unhinged”?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0664 When the agent of theology<\/em> (B3) sees what is in theologymirror<\/sup><\/em> (D2), he constructs a holistic version of the encounter.  After all, phenomena are expressions of their noumenon, either in terms of dispositions and powers<\/em> or in terms of matter and form<\/em>.  These pairs of real elements<\/em> may be expressed as hylomorphes <\/em>and correspond to Peirce’s category of secondness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
