The book arrives on my doorstep in October 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;The copyright is dated 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How time flies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0645 This examination builds on previous blogs and commentaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide230.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide230.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide230.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide230-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0646 A quick glance backwards is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabaczek&#8217;s story begins in the waning days of&nbsp;<em>the Age of Ideas,<\/em>&nbsp;when the Positivist&#8217;s judgment once thrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide231.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide231.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide231.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide231-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0647 The Positivist judgment holds two sources of illumination.&nbsp;&nbsp;Models are scientific.&nbsp;&nbsp;Noumena are the things themselves.&nbsp;&nbsp;Physics applies to models.&nbsp;&nbsp;Metaphysics applies to noumena.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, I ask, &#8220;Which one does the positivist intellect elevate over the other?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the first part of the story is that the positivist intellect dies, and lives on as a ghost (points 0001-0029).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0648 Tabaczek buries the positivist intellect and places&nbsp;<em>the two sources of illumination against one another<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is as if they reflect one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, the two sources also have their advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<em>Emergence,<\/em>&nbsp;Tabaczek argues that&nbsp;<em>models of emergence<\/em>&nbsp;require&nbsp;<em>metaphysical styles of analysis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<em>Divine Action and Emergence,<\/em>&nbsp;he sets out to correct&nbsp;<em>metaphysical emanations<\/em>&nbsp;reflecting&nbsp;<em>scientific models of emergence<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is as if these emanations are reflections of science in the mirror of theology.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Intellectuals inspired by science<\/em>&nbsp;want to see &#8216;<em>what is&#8217; of the Positivist&#8217;s judgment<\/em>&nbsp;in the mirror of theology.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, note the difference between&nbsp;<em>the picture of the Positivist&#8217;s judgment<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the two hylomorphes in Tabaczek&#8217;s mirror<\/em>&nbsp;(points 0039-0061).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide232.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide232.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide232.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide232-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0649 Why do I mention this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the introduction of the book before me, Tabaczek discusses his motivations.&nbsp;&nbsp;He, as a agent of theology, wants to exploit an opportunity.&nbsp;&nbsp;That opportunity is already present in the correction that he makes to&nbsp;<em>what an agent of science sees in the mirror of theology<\/em>&nbsp;(pictured below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0650 What an opportunity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabaczek offers the hope of&nbsp;<em>a multidimensional, open-minded, and comprehensive<\/em>&nbsp;(say nothing of comprehensible)&nbsp;<em>account of evolutionary theory<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The positivist intellect is dead.&nbsp;&nbsp;The positivist intellect ruled the Positivist&#8217;s judgment with the maxim, &#8220;Metaphysics is not allowed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0651 Now that the positivist intellect is dead, the two illuminations within the former Positivist&#8217;s judgment may transubstantiate into&nbsp;<em>the realm of actuality<\/em>&nbsp;and become&nbsp;<em>two hylomorphes,<\/em>&nbsp;standing like candles that reflect one another in Tabaczek&#8217;s mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabaczek, as&nbsp;<em>an agent of theology,<\/em>&nbsp;witnesses how&nbsp;<em>a scientist<\/em>&nbsp;views himself in&nbsp;<em>the mirror of theology<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The scientist<\/em>&nbsp;sees&nbsp;<em>the model<\/em>&nbsp;as more real than&nbsp;<em>the noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;(the thing itself, which cannot be objectified as its phenomena).&nbsp;&nbsp;Indeed,&nbsp;<em>the scientist<\/em>&nbsp;projects&nbsp;<em>&#8216;what is&#8217; of the Positivist&#8217;s judgment<\/em>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<em>the mirror of theology<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide233.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide233.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide233.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide233-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0652 Tabaczek wants to project&nbsp;<em>his philosophical construction of the noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;(in concert with its dispositions and powers, as well as its matter and form) into&nbsp;<em>the mirror of science<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, I wonder whether&nbsp;<em>any agent of science<\/em>&nbsp;is willing to stop listening to the ghost of the positivist intellect long enough to discern&nbsp;<em>what theologians project into the mirror of science<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0653 Yes, Tabaczek&#8217;s inquiry is all about optics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0654 So, who are the players involved in&nbsp;<em>the intellectual drama of Tabaczek&#8217;s mirror<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabaczek identifies three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, there must be four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0655 The first is&nbsp;<em>the agent of science<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The science<sup>agent&nbsp;<\/sup>is the one that makes the models.&nbsp;&nbsp;Two types of science<sup>agent<\/sup>&nbsp;stand out in the study of biological evolution: the natural historian and the geneticist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0656 The second is&nbsp;<em>the agent of theology<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tabaczek limits theology<sup>agent<\/sup>s to experts in Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) and Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274 A.D.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a way, this self-imposed limit is a handicap, since Aristotle and Aquinas philosophize long before Darwin publishes&nbsp;<em>On The Origin of Species<\/em>&nbsp;(1859).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another way, this self-imposed limit is a blessing, since it provides me with an occasion for examining his argument from the framework of Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914).&nbsp;&nbsp;According to the semiotician and Thomist John Deely (1942-2017), Peirce is the first postmodern philosopher.&nbsp;&nbsp;Peirce is also a co-discoverer of&nbsp;<em>the triadic nature of signs,&nbsp;<\/em>along with the Baroque scholastic (that is Thomist) John Poinsot (1589-1644), otherwise known as&nbsp;<em>John of Saint Thomas<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Peirce&#8217;s semiotics<\/em>&nbsp;begins where&nbsp;<em>Baroque scholasticism<\/em>&nbsp;leaves off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0657 The third is&nbsp;<em>the image that the scientist projects into the mirror of theology<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I label this image:&nbsp;<em>theology<sup>mirror<\/sup>,<\/em>&nbsp;in contrast to science<sup>agent<\/sup>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The theology<sup>agent<\/sup>&nbsp;can see the image in theology<sup>mirror<\/sup>, but is not the source of that image.&nbsp;&nbsp;I have already shown&nbsp;<em>the initial image that the agent of science sees in the mirror of theology<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I have also noted that Tabaczek aims to correct&nbsp;<em>that projection<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0658 The fourth is&nbsp;<em>the image that the theologian casts into the mirror of science<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I label this image: science<sup>mirror<\/sup>, in contrast to theology<sup>agent<\/sup>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The science<sup>agent&nbsp;<\/sup>can see the image in science<sup>mirror<\/sup>, but is not the source of that image.&nbsp;&nbsp;I have already indicated that the science<sup>agent<\/sup>&nbsp;(more or less) does not care what is in science<sup>mirror<\/sup>, because the ghost of the positivist intellect whispers in the ear of science<sup>agent<\/sup>, &#8220;All that metaphysical stuff is completely unnecessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0644 The full title of the book before me is&nbsp;Theistic Evolution: A Contemporary Aristotelian-Thomistic Perspective(Cambridge University Press: Cambridge: UK).
