{"id":7666,"date":"2024-05-11T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7666"},"modified":"2024-01-29T14:18:42","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T14:18:42","slug":"looking-at-mariusz-tabaczeks-book-2021-divine-action-and-emergence-part-17-of-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7666","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Mariusz Tabaczek&#8217;s Book (2021) &#8220;Divine Action and Emergence&#8221; (Part 17 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0283 At the risk of repeating myself, allow me to recount points 0155-0165.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0284 When science looks in the mirror, it sees the following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The model is the illumination.&nbsp;&nbsp;The noumenon is its lackluster reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Disciplinary language<\/em>&nbsp;is the continuity between&nbsp;<em>a mathematical and mechanical model<\/em>&nbsp;and its supporting&nbsp;<em>observations and measurements of phenomena<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Phenomena<\/em>&nbsp;are relevant only because they are&nbsp;<em>the observable and measurable facets of their noumenon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide111.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide111.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide111.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide111-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0285 Another way to say this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A model<\/em>&nbsp;is objectified as&nbsp;<em>observations and measurements<\/em>&nbsp;according to&nbsp;<em>the disciplinary language of a specialized scientific field<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The reflection in the mirror of theology<\/em>&nbsp;displays&nbsp;<em>a lack of disciplinary language<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is appropriate, because the science-agent uses explicit abstraction, hence the need for precisely defined spoken terms.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The reflection in the mirror<\/em>&nbsp;involves&nbsp;<em>implicit abstraction<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The human capacity for implicit abstraction<\/em>&nbsp;evolves in&nbsp;<em>the milieu of hand-talk and hand-speech talk<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>These ways of talking<\/em>&nbsp;do not permit explicit abstractions because hand-talk words are icons and indexes of their referents.&nbsp;&nbsp;Indeed, many hand-talk words image or point to their referent by imitating or indicating a&#8230; um&#8230; phenomenon of the noumenon.&nbsp;&nbsp;The part represents the whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0286 Another way to say this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way of thinking on the model side belongs to&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way of thinking on the noumenal side reflects&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this touches base with Razie Mah&#8217;s e-article,&nbsp;<em>The First Singularity and Its Fairy Tale Trace,<\/em>&nbsp;available at smashwords and other e-book venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0287 So, what happens when&nbsp;<em>the mirror called &#8220;philosophy&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;turns into&nbsp;<em>a mirror called &#8220;theology&#8221;?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, two substitutions are obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide112.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide112.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide112.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide112-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0288 Well, monotheists do not have much of a problem with this.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is an entire specialized language devoted to the apophatic notion that God cannot be objectified as the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, there is a problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the first chapter of Genesis, God creates the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the world objectifies God.&nbsp;&nbsp;Are technical corrections required to approach this issue? After all, how can God actually accomplish&nbsp;<em>the tasks described in the Creation Story?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, maybe God is not really creating our world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe, God creates&nbsp;<em>the Temple of the Heavens and the Earth<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, isn&#8217;t our world&nbsp;<em>the Temple of the Heavens and the Earth?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or is this another language game?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0289 Other issues include signs (which I will get to later) and emergence (which concerns Tabaczek).&nbsp;&nbsp;I already know that the model side has significant difficulty reducing emergent phenomena to&nbsp;<em>models based on truncated material and efficient causalities<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I also know that Tabaczek offers a helping hand with&nbsp;<em>the suggestion that science should stop truncating their causalities and return to a full helping of Aristotle<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Deacon agrees, but wants to reformulate Aristotelian terminology in order to wash away&nbsp;<em>the stain of metaphysics<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, the stain will not wash away!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0290 So, when&nbsp;<em>the empirio-schematic side<\/em>&nbsp;projects itself into&nbsp;<em>the mirror of theology,<\/em>&nbsp;it wants to construct&nbsp;<em>a disciplinary language in the mirror<\/em>&nbsp;that, at least technically, allows&nbsp;<em>the world to objectify its Creator<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;And, what better metaphor to choose than &#8220;containment&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide113.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide113.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide113.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide113-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0291&nbsp;<em>This brutal derivation of panentheism<\/em>&nbsp;(the label for &#8220;the world in God&#8221;) does not appear in Tabaczek&#8217;s text.&nbsp;Nevertheless,&nbsp;<em>this approach<\/em>&nbsp;accounts for&nbsp;<em>Tabaczek&#8217;s concern about theological reflections from philosophers standing on the agent-science side of the mirror<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Panentheism<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>incense offered to the ghost of the positivist intellect<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0283 At the risk of repeating myself, allow me to recount points 0155-0165. 0284 When science looks in the mirror, it sees the following.
