also implies that a scientist may surreptitiously slip formal and final causes into his models by defining terms in such a way that they appear to describe modern material and efficient factors, while harboring the shadows of the other causalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0167 For example, consider the claim that glucose tastes sweet because it is full of calories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, that sounds like&nbsp;<em>truncated material and efficient causalities<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, there is the added hint of&nbsp;<em>formal<\/em>&nbsp;(calories is a formal requirement)&nbsp;<em>and final<\/em>&nbsp;(sweetness is an incentive)&nbsp;<em>causes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0168 Why do scientists rely on&nbsp;<em>truncated material and efficient causalities?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These serve as constants and variables in&nbsp;<em>mathematical and mechanical models<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Models are&nbsp;<em>what ought to be<\/em>&nbsp;(secondness) in&nbsp;<em>the empirio-schematic judgment<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The category of secondness<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the realm of actuality<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, oddly enough, models are more actual than observations and measurements (<em>what is,<\/em>&nbsp;firstness, the realm of possibility).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide062.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide062.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide062.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide062-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0169&nbsp;<em>The empirio-schematic judgment<\/em>&nbsp;describes&nbsp;<em>the actual practices of modern science<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Disciplinary language (<em>relation<\/em>, thirdness) brings mechanical and mathematical models (<em>what ought to be,<\/em>&nbsp;secondness) into relation with observations and measurements (<em>what is,&nbsp;<\/em>firstness).&nbsp;&nbsp;Since each element is assigned to one of Peirce&#8217;s categories, the judgment is actionable.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>An actionable judgment<\/em>&nbsp;unfolds into&nbsp;<em>a category-based nested form<\/em>&nbsp;on the basis of&nbsp;<em>the assigned categories<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The empirio-schematic judgment<\/em>&nbsp;corresponds to&nbsp;<em>what ought to be<\/em>&nbsp;(secondness) in the Positivist&#8217;s judgment, where a positivist intellect (<em>relation,<\/em>&nbsp;thirdness) brings the empirio-schematic judgment (<em>what ought to be,<\/em>&nbsp;secondness) into relation with the monadic &#8220;hylomorphe&#8221;,&nbsp;<em>a noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;[cannot be objectified as]&nbsp;<em>its phenomena<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>what is,<\/em>&nbsp;firstness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The thing itself<\/em>&nbsp;cannot be objectified as&nbsp;<em>its observable and measurable facets<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0170 Here is a diagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide063.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide063.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide063.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide063-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0171 Now I have a question concerning&nbsp;<em>&#8216;what is&#8217; in the Positivist&#8217;s judgment<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If hylomorphes exemplify Peirce&#8217;s secondness, then why is this &#8220;hylomorphe&#8221; assigned to the category of firstness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A hylomorphe may be assigned to firstness, when&nbsp;<em>both sides of the hylomorphe<\/em>&nbsp;correspond to&nbsp;<em>the same thing<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Why?&nbsp;There is only one (not two) real element(s).&nbsp;&nbsp;In other words, if there is no noumenon, then there are no phenomena.&nbsp;&nbsp;If there are no phenomena, then it is doubtful that there is a noumenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0172 An apparently sleeping student suddenly raises a hand and asks, &#8220;But, if there are phenomena, but there is no noumenon, then can one assign a noumenon and pretend that it is&nbsp;<em>the thing itself?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then another student pipes in, &#8220;And what about when a noumenon does not have any phenomena, but one is certain that&nbsp;<em>the thing itself<\/em>&nbsp;must exist?&nbsp;&nbsp;Based on&nbsp;<em>the conviction that there is a noumenon,<\/em>&nbsp;can one identify&nbsp;<em>its phenomena?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0173 Uh-oh.&nbsp;&nbsp;I should not have asked that question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, since each element in the Positivist&#8217;s judgment is assigned to one of Peirce&#8217;s categories, the judgment may &#8220;unfold&#8221;
