{"id":7558,"date":"2024-04-12T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7558"},"modified":"2024-01-29T13:07:13","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T13:07:13","slug":"looking-at-mariusz-tabaczeks-book-2019-emergence-part-16-of-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7558","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Mariusz Tabaczek&#8217;s Book (2019) &#8220;Emergence&#8221; (Part 16 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0116 This reader can barely imagine&nbsp;<em>the heaps of intellectual garbage<\/em>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<em>this earnest and prayerful graduate student<\/em>struggles through in constructing&nbsp;<em>chapters one and two<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, at the start of chapter three, Tabaczek introduces the philosopher scientist, the guru at the top of the academic mountain (the story takes place in Berkeley, after all), the much-ballyhooed, well-published and honorably appointed, Professor Terrence Deacon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deacon works on&nbsp;<em>the model side of Tabaczek&#8217;s mirror<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;He converses with the ghost of the positivist intellect.&nbsp;&nbsp;He fashions novel versions of Aristotle&#8217;s four causes in order to accomplish, on the science side, what any dullard would do on the philosophical side of Tabaczek&#8217;s mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By &#8220;dullard&#8221;, I mean &#8220;a nerd who believes in the risen Christ&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0117 With that in mind, I have a few caveats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, when I mention &#8220;Deacon&#8221;, I mean&nbsp;<em>what Tabaczek says about the work of Professor Deacon<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, Tabaczek writes the book under examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, on both sides of Tabaczek&#8217;s mirror, spoken words mean&nbsp;<em>whatever the viewing agent thinks they mean<\/em>, because each viewing agent projects&nbsp;<em>his own image<\/em>&nbsp;into the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope that makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0118 Fortunate for me, I am already using&nbsp;<em>Deacon&#8217;s terminology<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Deacon&#8217;s terms<\/em>&nbsp;label&nbsp;<em>the levels for the interscope of the hydrogen-oxygen fuel-cell<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Thermodynamic&#8221; labels orthograde processes on the content level.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Homeodynamic&#8221; covers the contragrade processes on the situation level.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Morphodynamic&#8221; covers the perspective level, where the energy captured by an emergent phenomenon<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is dissipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless, to say, there is one key term that I neglect.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Teleodynamic&#8221; applies to the entire interscope, especially the integration of the perspective-level actuality<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;into other emergent processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, my example of a fuel-cell driven motor is not complete, because the motor gets integrated into another emergent-bearing interscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0119&nbsp;<em>My manner of expressing the thermodynamic (content) level<\/em>&nbsp;differs from&nbsp;<em>Deacon&#8217;s manner<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I prefer to express&nbsp;<em>the unconstrained orthograde reaction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deacon prefers to show&nbsp;<em>how the situation-level potential<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;constrains the orthograde reaction in order to exploit reagent properties<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a comparison using the ongoing example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide049.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide049.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide049.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide049-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0116 This reader can barely imagine&nbsp;the heaps of intellectual garbage&nbsp;that&nbsp;this earnest and prayerful graduate studentstruggles through in constructing&nbsp;chapters one and two.
