(Part 3 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0015 In comedies and in tragedies, the audience always knows something that the characters on stage do not.&nbsp;&nbsp;I do not know whether Tabaczek&#8217;s enormous and grueling efforts are funny or futile in the eyes of God.&nbsp;&nbsp;But no matter how God views the author&#8217;s long and arduous studies, I know this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabaczek does not employ, analyze or justify&nbsp;<em>the distinction between philosophers of science<\/em>&nbsp;(who are concerned about models)&nbsp;<em>and analytical metaphysicians<\/em>&nbsp;(who are concerned about noumena).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabaczek does analyze and review&nbsp;<em>a massive amount of academic material<\/em>&nbsp;in his effort to show that&nbsp;<em>a revised &#8220;neo-Aristotelianism&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;is available to&nbsp;<em>contemporary philosophers of science<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Aristotle&#8217;s four causes<\/em>&nbsp;should assist&nbsp;<em>philosophers of science who wrestle with the question of emergence<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;His academic work is diligent and earnest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0016 I see&nbsp;<em>what Tabaczek is trying to do<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I conclude that his demonstration will inevitably fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0017 How so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My answer relies on&nbsp;<em>Comments on Jacques Maritain&#8217;s Book (1935) Natural Philosophy,<\/em>&nbsp;as well as the commentaries listed in the series,&nbsp;<em>Phenomenology and the Positivist Intellect<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;These are available at smashwords and other e-book venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following argument complements Tabaczek&#8217;s brief history of causality from the middle ages to the present (sections 1.3 to 1.5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0018 I start with the question, &#8220;What is judgment?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A judgment is a triadic relation consisting of three elements:&nbsp;<em>relation, what is<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>what ought to be<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;When each of these elements is assigned to one of Peirce&#8217;s categories, then the judgment becomes actionable.&nbsp;&nbsp;Actionable judgments &#8220;unfold&#8221; into category-based nested forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of the general form of judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide005.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide005.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide005.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide005-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In judgment,&nbsp;<em>a relation<\/em>&nbsp;(category) brings&nbsp;<em>what ought to be<\/em>&nbsp;(category) into relation with&nbsp;<em>what is<\/em>&nbsp;(category).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0019 I already stated the empirio-schematic judgment.&nbsp;&nbsp;Let me say it again.&nbsp;&nbsp;Disciplinary language (<em>relation<\/em>, thirdness) brings mathematical and mechanical models (<em>what ought to be<\/em>, secondness) into relation with observations and measurements of phenomena (<em>what is<\/em>, firstness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide006.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide006.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide006.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide006-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0020 The empirio-schematic judgment occupies the slot for&nbsp;<em>what ought to be<\/em>&nbsp;for the Positivist&#8217;s judgment.&nbsp;&nbsp;The fact that&nbsp;<em>the Positivist&#8217;s judgment<\/em>&nbsp;contains&nbsp;<em>the empirio-schematic judgment<\/em>&nbsp;is confusing.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, the positivist intellect has a rule saying, &#8220;Metaphysics is not allowed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a simplified picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide007.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide007.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide007.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide007-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0021 Simplified?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Positivist&#8217;s judgment is initially formulated, in the early 1700s, as provincial mechanical philosophers (in northern Protestant Europe) reject the universal Latin-Age scholastics (in all of Europe, but mainly southern and Catholic Europe).&nbsp;These mechanical philosophers aim to narrow inquiry to the observations and measurements of phenomena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The relation in the Positivist&#8217;s judgment<\/em>&nbsp;is the positivist intellect, who enforces only one rule.&nbsp;&nbsp;Metaphysics is not allowed.&nbsp;&nbsp;This rule dooms Tabaczek&#8217;s quest from the start.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Aristotle&#8217;s four causes<\/em>&nbsp;allow the inquirer to understand the noumenon.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Modern science in the Age of Ideas<\/em>&nbsp;wants to mathematically and mechanically model observations and measurements of phenomena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0022 The [and],&nbsp;<em>the contiguity between a noumenon and its phenomena,<\/em>&nbsp;becomes a point of contention.&nbsp;&nbsp;The argument ends up in a truce, of sorts.&nbsp;&nbsp;Casual readers of Kant come up with a slogan to replace the [and], at least for advocates of science.&nbsp;&nbsp;The substitute is [cannot be objectified as].&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>A noumenon<\/em>&nbsp;[cannot be objectified as]&nbsp;<em>its phenomena<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0023 To me,&nbsp;<em>the what-is-ness of a noumenon [cannot be objectified as] its phenomena<\/em>&nbsp;dooms Tabaczek&#8217;s quest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Tabaczek is rewarded his doctorate and his impossible project is written up and published by University of Notre Dame Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does this indicate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is the Positivist&#8217;s judgment in trouble?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0015 In comedies and in tragedies, the audience always knows something that the characters on stage do not.&nbsp;&nbsp;I do not know whether Tabaczek&#8217;s enormous and grueling efforts are funny or futile in the eyes of God.&nbsp;&nbsp;But no matter how God views the author&#8217;s long and arduous studies, I know this.
