{"id":7413,"date":"2024-03-13T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-13T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7413"},"modified":"2024-01-08T20:17:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T20:17:38","slug":"looking-at-michael-tomasellos-book-2016-a-natural-history-of-human-morality-part-12-of-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7413","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Michael Tomasello&#8217;s Book (2016) &#8220;A Natural History of Human Morality&#8221; (Part 12 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0501 What does&nbsp;<em>the prior blog<\/em>&nbsp;imply?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As far as hand talk is concerned,&nbsp;<em>the era of joint intentionality<\/em>&nbsp;corresponds to the&nbsp;<em>evolution of sensible construction<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the era of collective intentionality<\/em>&nbsp;corresponds to&nbsp;<em>the evolution of social construction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0502&nbsp;<em>Social construction<\/em>&nbsp;is not sensible, yet, it leads to&nbsp;<em>sensible constructions that otherwise would have never been imagined using sensible construction alone<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;How else can one culturally select for something&nbsp;<em>more powerful than productivity<sub>2H<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and for&nbsp;<em>something more worthy of affiliation than having fun<sub>2V<\/sub>?<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;When it comes to communities, mega-bands and tribes, sensible thinking is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, if this sounds a little crazy, then consider&nbsp;<em>A Primer on Sensible and Social Construction,<\/em>&nbsp;by Razie Mah.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also, consider the complementary views presented in&nbsp;<em>How To Define The Word &#8220;Religion&#8221;<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both are available at smashwords and other e-book venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0503 Meanwhile, know this.&nbsp;&nbsp;As a man of science, the evolutionary anthropologist, Michael Tomasello, cannot model&nbsp;<em>the natural history of human morality<\/em>&nbsp;using the<em>&nbsp;imagery of third-person morality.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Why?&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The third-person is<\/em>&nbsp;not &#8220;objective, in the modern sense of the word, but &#8220;<em>suprasubjective<\/em>&#8221; in the medieval scholastic sense of the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the modern, &#8220;objective&#8221; is&nbsp;<em>a proposition that holds despite<\/em>&nbsp;<em>what any of us think of it<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The objective proposition stands outside ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the scholastic, &#8220;suprasubjective&#8221; is&nbsp;<em>a proposition that both contains and transcends the subjectivity (or attitudes of) every one of us<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The suprasubjective proposition resides within and encompasses ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus,&nbsp;<em>this difference<\/em>&nbsp;is most apparent with&nbsp;<em>explicit abstraction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0504 In&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in,<\/em>&nbsp;hand-talk and hand-speech talk cannot perform&nbsp;<em>explicit abstraction<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They can only facilitate&nbsp;<em>implicit abstraction<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Therefore,&nbsp;<em>long-lived traditions<\/em>&nbsp;sustain&nbsp;<em>intentional implicit abstractions<\/em>&nbsp;that, for example, promote&nbsp;<em>the harmony of social circles<\/em>&nbsp;and select for&nbsp;<em>individuals inclined to cogitate those collective implicit abstractions<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Those inclined<\/em>&nbsp;are blessed with&nbsp;<em>reproductive success<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what am I saying?&nbsp;&nbsp;Where am I going with all this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The era of collective intentionality<\/em>&nbsp;must have&nbsp;<em>the same relational structure as the previous eras.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, because Tomasello hides&nbsp;<em>what he is trying to discern<\/em>&nbsp;behind the word, &#8220;objective&#8221;, the intersection is obscured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is&nbsp;<em>what I expect to see<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide34-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide34-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide34-2.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide34-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The slogan<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0<em>a sign from a third person<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This slogan<\/em>\u00a0presents itself in\u00a0<em>the milieu of hand talk<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0501 What does&nbsp;the prior blog&nbsp;imply?
