{"id":7386,"date":"2024-03-19T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7386"},"modified":"2024-01-08T19:54:42","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T19:54:42","slug":"looking-at-michael-tomasellos-book-2016-a-natural-history-of-human-morality-part-7-of-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7386","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Michael Tomasello&#8217;s Book (2016) &#8220;A Natural History of Human Morality&#8221; (Part 7 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0450&nbsp;<em>The era of joint intentionality<\/em>&nbsp;begins with&nbsp;<em>bipedalism as an adaptation to a changing environment and ecology<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;In eastern Africa, tropical forest gives way to mixed forest and savannah.&nbsp;&nbsp;The individual &#8220;southern ape&#8221; is less likely to successfully forage alone.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, for some lineages, collaborative foraging offers an option.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, it becomes a preferred option.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, it becomes the only option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the group that is culturally selected for in the environment and ecology of mixed forest and savannah<sub>3b<\/sub>operating on the potential of&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8216;obligate collaborative foraging&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0451 Here is how the era starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide20-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide20-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide20-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Slide20-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0452 Chapter three is titled, &#8220;Second-Person Morality&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0453 Here, a key insight from British anthropology comes into play, as delineated in&nbsp;<em>Comments on<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Clive Gamble, John Gowlett and Robin Dunbar&#8217;s Book (2014) Thinking Big<\/em>&nbsp;(by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues).&nbsp;&nbsp;With speciation to Australopithecus (transliterated &#8220;southern ape&#8221;), bipedalism frees the hands and enslaves the feet.&nbsp;&nbsp;The feet do the walking.&nbsp;&nbsp;The hands do the talking.&nbsp;&nbsp;At this point in hominin evolution, adaptations into&nbsp;<em>the niche of triadic relations<\/em>&nbsp;enter into the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social circles differentiate.&nbsp;&nbsp;Love and affection characterizes family (5) and intimate friends (5).&nbsp;&nbsp;Joint attention and shared intentionality typifies teams (15).&nbsp;&nbsp;Teams are the active agents for obligate collaborative foraging.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Avoidance of predation<\/em>&nbsp;underlies bands (50).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0454 What does that imply?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The groups of interest for the era of individual intentionality<\/em>&nbsp;are family (5), intimate friends (5) and band (50).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The group that is of interest in the era of joint intentionality<\/em>&nbsp;is the team (15).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0455 I ask, &#8220;Is a team<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;the intersection of power<sub>2H<\/sub>&nbsp;and affiliation<sub>2V<\/sub>?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, and no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, if&nbsp;<em>the meanings of the words<\/em>&nbsp;change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, if&nbsp;<em>the meanings of the words<\/em>&nbsp;remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0456 According to Tomasello, second-person morality develops as &#8220;you&#8221; and &#8220;me&#8221; act in concert as a &#8220;we&#8221; (team).&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;We&#8221; have the motivations and skills required to pursue a joint goal, guided by shared intentions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Joint attention<\/em>&nbsp;structures&nbsp;<em>individual perceptions of others&#8217; actions<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Joint attention<\/em>&nbsp;calls for&nbsp;<em>judgment<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Habitual perceptions and judgments<\/em>&nbsp;define &#8220;roles&#8221; in team activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0457 Roles are not pre-defined slots, arranged into organizational charts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Roles&#8221; label&nbsp;<em>recurring patterns of habitual perceptions and judgments of one&#8217;s teammates.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;These perceptions and judgments are in flux.
