{"id":7351,"date":"2024-02-05T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7351"},"modified":"2024-01-05T20:56:33","modified_gmt":"2024-01-05T20:56:33","slug":"this-examination-considers-tomasellos-book-through-semiotic-lens-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7351","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Michael Tomasello&#8217;s Book (2014) &#8220;A Natural History of Human Thinking&#8221; (Part 22 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0383 Chapter five is titled &#8220;Human Thinking as Cooperation&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomasello considers other theories of human cognitive evolution (but not including Razie Mah&#8217;s masterwork,&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche,&nbsp;<\/em>available at smashwords and other e-book venues).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He draws four general propositions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0384 One, for&nbsp;<em>the era of individual intentionality,<\/em>&nbsp;competition with groupmates leads to sophisticated forms of primate social and practical cognition, characteristic of great apes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two, for&nbsp;<em>the era of joint intentionality,<\/em>&nbsp;obligate collaborative foraging favors the evolution of new forms of hominin social coordination and thinking, without (what a modern anthropologist would label) culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three, for&nbsp;<em>the era of collective intentionality,<\/em>&nbsp;intergroup competition, exploration of novel ecologies and environments, and larger group size favors the evolution of conventionalized culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fourth, in regards to&nbsp;<em>whatever may be missing in the first, second and third points,<\/em>&nbsp;culture accumulates and allows specializations that cultivate a wide variety of cognitive skills and types of thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0385 This examination demonstrates that&nbsp;<em>each of these four general propositions<\/em>&nbsp;coheres with the hypothesis contained in&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may not be a surprise, since&nbsp;<em>Razie Mah&#8217;s masterwork<\/em>&nbsp;summarizes&nbsp;<em>commentaries on four works in evolutionary anthropology<\/em>, published within&nbsp;<em>the past three decades<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0386 Here is a list of the four commentaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Comments on Steven Mithen&#8217;s Book (1996) The Prehistory of The Mind<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Comments on Clive Gamble, John Gowlett and Robin Dunbar&#8217;s Book (2014) Thinking Big<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Comments on Derek Bickerton&#8217;s Book (2014) More Than Nature Needs<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Comments on Robert Berwick and Noam Chomsky&#8217;s Book (2016) Why Only Us?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0387 Along with&nbsp;<em>A Primer on Natural Signs<\/em>&nbsp;and the masterwork,&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche<\/em>, these four commentaries constitute&nbsp;<em>A Course on The Human Niche<\/em>, available at smashwords and other e-book venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0388 But, that is not all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This examination of Tomasello&#8217;s arc of inquiry continues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0383 Chapter five is titled &#8220;Human Thinking as Cooperation&#8221;.
