For the next blogs, discussing Tatha Wiley\u2019s Original Sin<\/em> (2002), I will rely on a foundational semiotic tool: \u201cprecission\u201d.<\/p>\n

Charles Sanders Peirce formulated precission as a way to describe a crucial relation between his three categories of being: thirdness, secondness and firstness.<\/p>\n

The categories are both simple and difficult to comprehend.<\/p>\n

Thirdness is the realm of sign, mediation and judgment.\u00a0 Every being in thirdness brings at least two other beings into relation.\u00a0 Three elements are required, hence the term: \u201cthirdness\u201d.\u00a0 Beings in thirdness cannot be seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched.\u00a0 They are purely relational.<\/p>\n

Secondness is the realm of actuality, cause and effect, brute force, and situations.\u00a0 This is the realm of the senses, plus more, since many physical processes cannot be sensed.\u00a0 Consider the idea of phenomena.\u00a0 \u201cPhenomena\u201d require \u201csomething to be observed\u201d and \u201can observer\u201d. \u00a0At least two elements are required, hence the term: \u201csecondness\u201d.<\/p>\n

Firstness is the realm of possibility, potential, purpose, essence, design and implications.\u00a0\u00a0 Imagine walking up to someone and asking: \u201cWhat is the matter?\u201d\u00a0 This \u201cwhat\u201d can be seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched, but that is not what the question is about.\u00a0 The question is about what could happen.<\/p>\n

Another way to say it: \u201cMatter\u201d makes \u201cwhat is observed\u201d possible.<\/p>\n

Only one element is required, hence the term: \u201cfirstness\u201d.<\/p>\n

Precission is the relation of \u201cemergence\u201d between the categories:\u00a0 Each category \u201cemerges\u201d or \u201cprecinds from\u201d the immediate lower category.\u00a0 Thirdness prescinds from secondness.\u00a0 Secondness prescinds from Firstness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
