{"id":7144,"date":"2024-01-12T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7144"},"modified":"2023-12-30T14:22:10","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T14:22:10","slug":"looking-at-michael-tomasellos-book-2008-origins-of-human-communication-part-5-of-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=7144","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Michael Tomasello&#8217;s Book (2008) &#8220;Origins of Human Communication&#8221; (Part 5 of 12)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0120 In chapter three, Tomasello shows that human newborns and infants innately sense that intention<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;underlies specifying signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To explain this fact, Tomasello proposes&nbsp;<em>his cooperation model<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Shared intentionality<\/em>&nbsp;presupposes&nbsp;<em>a background sense of the other&nbsp;<\/em>as&nbsp;<em>a candidate for cooperative agency<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This requires (1) cognitive skills for creating joint attention and intentions and (2) social motivations for helping and sharing with others.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tomasello labels these formal requirements, (1) &#8220;common conceptual ground&#8221; and (2) &#8220;mutual expectations&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0121 Do&nbsp;<em>the interventional and specifying signs for the chimpanzee arm raise<\/em>&nbsp;meet these requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of the sequence, in the scholastic three-level interscope.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide14.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide14-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0122 In the (apparently inside out) interventional sign-relation,&nbsp;<em>I intend to play<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SV<sub>i<\/sub>) stands for&nbsp;<em>a raised arm<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SO<sub>i<\/sub>) with respect to&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;operating on&nbsp;<em>the potential of &#8216;something happening&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SI<sub>i<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the (more familiarly structured) specifying sign-relation,&nbsp;<em>a raised arm<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SV<sub>s<\/sub>) stands for&nbsp;<em>let us play<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SO<sub>s<\/sub>) in regards to&nbsp;<em>what it means to me<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;operating on&nbsp;<em>the potential meaning of &#8216;raised arm&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;(SI<sub>s<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0123 For all practical purposes, this model works just fine for great apes and perhaps, bipedal australopithecines.&nbsp;&nbsp;One youngster does not inform the other youngster about content as much as provide a signal to initiate a desired situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as the other example is presented in the same manner, then one australopithecine informs another about content and that content initiates the desired situation.&nbsp;&nbsp;How else is one friend going to warn another?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide15.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide15.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide15-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0124 Some of&nbsp;<em>the hallmarks of human communication<\/em>&nbsp;are apparent in this diagram, when compared to the prior diagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is the sense that one hominin is the communicator and the other hominin receives a communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intent is to inform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as in youthful chimpanzee play, both hominins share a common conceptual ground. Both know&nbsp;<em>the pantomime-word &#8220;snake&#8221;<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both know that&nbsp;<em>the pointing finger<\/em>&nbsp;means &#8220;there&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a mutual expectation that [SNAKE][THERE]<sub>2a<\/sub>specifies something real<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;in the normal context of&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;So,&nbsp;<em>mutual expectation<\/em>&nbsp;initiates&nbsp;<em>a situation common to both,<\/em>&nbsp;just like chimpanzee play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0125 But, doesn&#8217;t there seem to be a missing sign?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first example, the missing sign is not so obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second example, it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The missing sign is called the exemplar sign.&nbsp;&nbsp;The exemplar sign is first discussed in&nbsp;<em>Comments on John Deely&#8217;s Book (1994) New Beginnings<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;A more recent discussion is found in Razie Mah&#8217;s blog for November 2023, titled&nbsp;<em>Looking at John Deely&#8217;s Book (2010) Semiotic Animal<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0126 Here is a diagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide16.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide16.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide16-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0127 Note the substitutions in the perspective-level of&nbsp;<em>the scholastic three-level interscope for how humans think<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The normal context<sub>3c<\/sub>&nbsp;is not, &#8220;Does this make sense?<sub>3c<\/sub>&#8220;.&nbsp;&nbsp;It<sub>3c<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a common conceptual ground<sub>3c<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;If the common conceptual ground<sub>3c<\/sub>&nbsp;does not make sense, then how can it be held in common?&nbsp;&nbsp;This provides&nbsp;<em>a high standard for hominin thinking,<\/em>&nbsp;doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the potential<sub>1c<\/sub>&nbsp;is not, &#8220;the possibility of contextualizing the situation<sub>1c<\/sub>&#8220;.&nbsp;&nbsp;It<sub>1c<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the possibilities inherent in mutual expectations<sub>1c<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0128 The above figure captures the message of chapter three, titled &#8220;Hominin Cooperative Communication&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0120 In chapter three, Tomasello shows that human newborns and infants innately sense that intention2c&nbsp;underlies specifying signs.
