(Part 1 of 12)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0083 In 2008 AD, Michael Tomasello, then co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, publishes the work before me (MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This book is the second marker in Tomasello&#8217;s intellectual journey.&nbsp;&nbsp;I start following his journey with&nbsp;<em>Looking at Michael Tomasello&#8217;s Book (1999) &#8220;The Cultural Origins of Human Cognition&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;(appearing in Razie Mah&#8217;s January 2024 blog).&nbsp;&nbsp;That is the first marker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0084 The second marker starts as an academic presentation in 2006.&nbsp;&nbsp;His Jean Nicod Lectures, in Paris, concerns his work on great ape gestural communication, human infant gestural communication and human children&#8217;s language development.&nbsp;&nbsp;These lectures attempt to construct&nbsp;<em>one coherent account<\/em>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<em>the evolution of hominin communication<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, that terminology.&nbsp;&nbsp;Where Tomasello inscribes, &#8220;human&#8221;, I say, &#8220;hominin&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0085 From my examination at the first marker, I already have a guess about Tomasello&#8217;s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide01.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide01.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide01-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0086 Note that the titles of the levels have changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also note that human ontogeny<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>models of child development currently built by psychologists<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>, associates to phenotypes and genetics.&nbsp;&nbsp;Joint attention<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>models in evolutionary psychology concerning hominin cognition<sub>2a<\/sub>,<\/em>associates to adaptations and natural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0087 Tomasello uses the word, &#8220;origins&#8221;, in his title.&nbsp;&nbsp;Does this suppose that human communication may be regarded as&nbsp;<em>a phenotypic trait<\/em>&nbsp;or as&nbsp;<em>an adaptation?<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;Or maybe, the conjunction is &#8220;and&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the above figure, I get the idea that the phenotype virtually contextualizes the adaptation.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, that is not really the case.&nbsp;&nbsp;The phenotype<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;virtually situates a species&#8217; or individual&#8217;s DNA<sub>2a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a diagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide02.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide02.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide02-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0088 Not surprisingly,&nbsp;<em>this diagram in genetics<\/em>&nbsp;has&nbsp;<em>the same two-level relational structure<\/em>&nbsp;<em>as Darwin&#8217;s paradigm for natural history<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide03.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide03-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0089 What does this imply?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A mystery<\/em>&nbsp;stands at&nbsp;<em>the heart of evolutionary biology<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The adaptation<\/em>&nbsp;is not the same as&nbsp;<em>the phenotype<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, together, they constitute&nbsp;<em>a single actuality<\/em>, which may be labeled&nbsp;<em>a genus, a species or an individual<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Two category-based nested forms<\/em>&nbsp;intersect in&nbsp;<em>the realm of actuality<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is like two streets that meet.&nbsp;&nbsp;The intersection is constituted by both streets.&nbsp;&nbsp;As far as traffic goes, intersections are sites of dangerous contradictions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Traffic from one street should not collide with traffic from the other street.&nbsp;&nbsp;I suppose that&nbsp;<em>the intersection of adaptation and phenotype<\/em>carries&nbsp;<em>irreconcilable contradictions<\/em>&nbsp;as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0090 Perhaps, Tomasello&#8217;s vision may be resolved by considering both joint attention<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;and human ontogeny<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;as adaptations, even though the latter is technically, phenotypic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suggest this because selection is the normal context for all three levels in Tomasello&#8217;s vision.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since natural selection goes with adaptation, the vision is one of natural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0091 That implies that&nbsp;<em>the potentials for all three levels<\/em>&nbsp;are like niches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human ontogeny<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;is an adaptation that emerges from and situates the potential of human culture<sub>2b<\/sub>, where human culture<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is like&nbsp;<em>an actuality independent of the adapting species of individuals undergoing development<sub>3c<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human culture<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is like an adaptation that emerges from and situates the potential of joint attention<sub>2a<\/sub>, where joint attention<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;is like&nbsp;<em>an actuality independent of the adapting ways of doing things<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joint attention<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;is like an adaptation that emerges from and situates sociogenesis<sub>1a<\/sub>, where sociogenesis<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;is the potential of&#8230; what?&#8230; I have run out of&nbsp;<em>actualities independent of the adapting species<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0092 Here is where&nbsp;<em>the foundational Tomasello-Mah synthesis<\/em>&nbsp;enters the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide04.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide04.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide04-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah, so here is a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tomasello&#8217;s vision of the origins of human communication<\/em>&nbsp;conceals&nbsp;<em>the actuality underlying sociogenesis<sub>1a<\/sub>,&nbsp;<\/em>the potential<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;giving rise to joint attention<sub>2a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The human niche<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the potential of triadic relations<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0093 What about the subscripts in the preceding paragraph?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They belong to Tomasello&#8217;s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide05.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide05.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide05.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Slide05-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0094 This subscript business can be confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me,&nbsp;<em>the concealment in Tomasello&#8217;s vision<\/em>&nbsp;is not necessarily a drawback.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rather, it presents an opportunity to re-articulate&nbsp;<em>Tomasello&#8217;s arc of inquiry<\/em>&nbsp;using the category-based nested form and other triadic relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0095 In the prior series of blogs, examining a book published in 1999, I introduced&nbsp;<em>an interscope for the way humans think<\/em>&nbsp;that derives from work by medieval schoolmen, the so-called &#8220;scholastics&#8221;
