well&#8230; my blather about&nbsp;<em>specificative extrinsic formal causality<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Phantasm<sub>2b<\/sub>and manifest images<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>the stuff of opinions<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;merely situate content.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even though they<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;appear to concern reality, they<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;are really user-end illusions, like&nbsp;<em>the meanings of spoken words<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>the interfaces of mobile-phone applications<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;are the products of both evolutionary paradigms and explicit abstraction.&nbsp;&nbsp;Evolutionary paradigms contribute to design in one way.&nbsp;&nbsp;Explicit abstraction contributes to design in another way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0058 Here is a picture of&nbsp;<em>terms that apply to actualities in a two-level interscope<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide12-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide12-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7039\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide12-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide12-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0059 It makes me wonder about that word, &#8220;design&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is &#8220;design&#8221;&nbsp;<em>an attribute of the manifest image<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;that dwells in the user-end illusion that I call &#8220;my mind&#8221;?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or does &#8220;design&#8221; apply to&nbsp;<em>the neural networks<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;that result from neurons<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;naturally selecting for synapses<sub>1b<\/sub>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is&nbsp;<em>my user-end illusion<\/em>&nbsp;best described as&nbsp;<em>a little homunculus capable of planning and carrying out those plans&nbsp;<\/em>or<em>competence without comprehension?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0060 Or, do these questions pose a false dichotomy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are my neurons like selective breeders of synapses?&nbsp;&nbsp;Do synapses flourish when plugged into a neural network?&nbsp;&nbsp;Do neurons and synapses serve as the material and instrumental support for an immaterial phantasm?&nbsp;&nbsp;I suppose so.&nbsp;&nbsp;Neurons are long-lived compared to synapses.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, they may support selection through producing and sustaining synapses.&nbsp;Neurons are entrepreneurs who often outlive one particular business (neural network) and end up participating in another.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The pattern of synapses established by a neuron<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;may be regarded as&nbsp;<em>an adaptation<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0061 For&nbsp;<em>classical biological evolution,<\/em>&nbsp;natural selection operates on individuals within a species.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each individual is on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For&nbsp;<em>the evolution that Dennett is interested in,&nbsp;<\/em>synapses are not like individuals.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are like toolkits, designed for neurons to network with other neurons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0062 Okay, then let me take that to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder whether the relation between&nbsp;<em>human culture<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>our species expressa<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>, have the same evolutionary configuration.&nbsp;&nbsp;So,&nbsp;<em>human culture<\/em>&nbsp;reproduces&nbsp;<em>neuronal natural selection<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>a meme<sub>2a<\/sub>, a species impressa<sub>2a<\/sub>,<\/em>reproduces&nbsp;<em>the role of the synapse<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, humans are long-lived compared to memes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Memes are not individuals.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are like toolkits, designed for humans to network with other humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of &#8220;neural evolution&#8221;, Dennett proposes the label &#8220;cultural evolution&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide13-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide13-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7040\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide13-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide13-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0063 This brings me back to&nbsp;<em>the manifest image,<\/em>&nbsp;produced mechanically and instrumentally by<em>&nbsp;neuron-driven evolution,<\/em>and, perhaps,&nbsp;<em>mechanically and instrumentally producing cultural evolution<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Am I like&nbsp;<em>a neuron of cultural evolution?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0064 Thank God that Daisy has not figured out that option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The logic of this exposition<\/em>&nbsp;would have Daisy as&nbsp;<em>a short-lived synapse-like being<\/em>&nbsp;held on a leash by&nbsp;<em>a long-lived neuron-like master<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0065 What an incredible&nbsp;<em>manifest image!<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What&nbsp;<em>portraits of neuronal and cultural Darwinian paradigms<\/em>&nbsp;are on display in Dennett&#8217;s book.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Metaphysics-laden manifest images<\/em>&nbsp;accord with&nbsp;<em>the author&#8217;s physics-laden scientific images&#8230; er&#8230; models of biological and social phenomena<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet, Dennett does not clearly envision the accordance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0066 Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dennett&#8217;s work contains&nbsp;<em>a subliminal, or maybe&#8230;
