(Part 6 of 20)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0048 In science, metaphysics is not allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, Aristotle&#8217;s four causes allow comprehension, because they step out of&nbsp;<em>the physics of material and instrumental causalities<\/em>, even as they include them.&nbsp;&nbsp;Comprehension wraps actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;with a normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and a potential<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The resulting&nbsp;<em>category-based nested form<\/em>&nbsp;entangles actuality, even as it transcends actuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are triadic relations real?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are they real enough to provide&nbsp;<em>the ultimate human niche?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0049 Surely,&nbsp;<em>the similarity between the relational structure of Darwin&#8217;s paradigm and the specifying sign<\/em>&nbsp;is unsettling.&nbsp;Dennett writes&nbsp;<em>this similarity<\/em>&nbsp;out of his many scenarios.&nbsp;&nbsp;Why?&nbsp;&nbsp;The similarity stinks of metaphysics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0050 Say what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The absence and the presence of metaphysics<\/em>&nbsp;is on display when comparing&nbsp;<em>the content-level of the Darwinian paradigm<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>the content level of the human mind,<\/em>&nbsp;as depicted by those medieval Aristotelian scholastics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide11-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide11-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7036\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide11-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Slide11-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0051 For&nbsp;<em>the Darwinian paradigm,&nbsp;<\/em>metaphysics is not allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no content-level normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biologists do not worry about comprehending&nbsp;<em>the actuality independent of the adapting species<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;All they worry about is&nbsp;<em>the potential of the actuality<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;in defining a niche<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0052 For&nbsp;<em>the scholastic picture of the way humans think,<\/em>&nbsp;metaphysics is allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs cannot be understood without metaphysics (that is, final and formal causation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The species impressa<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;is the sign-vehicle of the specifying sign (SV<sub>s<\/sub>), regardless of&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the potential of &#8216;something happening&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet, the specifying sign-vehicle<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;becomes affordance-rich when the content-level normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;are available.&nbsp;&nbsp;The normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;associates to formal causation.&nbsp;&nbsp;The potential<sub>1a<\/sub>associates to final causation.&nbsp;&nbsp;Without a content-level normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1a<\/sub>,&nbsp;<em>situating an impression<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;becomes difficult and prone to error.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The impression<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;becomes less comprehensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0053 When I take my dog on a walk and the beast suddenly puts her tail between her legs (SV<sub>s<\/sub>) , I know that she is upset (SO<sub>s<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;That is the specifying sign-relation in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she does so when encountering the neighbor&#8217;s cat, I see the cat as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;The cat triggers&nbsp;<em>a species impressa<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;She has prehensile paws that may claw my dog&#8217;s nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this instance,&nbsp;<em>what is going on in my brain<\/em>&nbsp;is more like the selective breeding of synapses, because&nbsp;<em>the actuality independent of the adapting synapses<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&#8230; er&#8230;&nbsp;<em>the species impressa<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;presents within&nbsp;<em>a non-empty normal context<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0054 On other occasions, I do not know&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;nor&nbsp;<em>what possibilities are raised<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;when her tail goes between her hind legs<sub>2a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In these instances,&nbsp;<em>what is going on in my brain<\/em>&nbsp;is more like a wide-open exercise in synaptic selection.&nbsp;&nbsp;No phantasm seems adaptive until an affordance becomes obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0055 My conclusion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<em>species impressa<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>, an impression<sub>2a<\/sub>, a sensation<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;or a feeling<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;marks&nbsp;<em>a human encounter with a thing or event<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the content-level&nbsp;<em>species impressa<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;is embedded in the normal context of&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the potential of &#8216;something&#8217; happening<sub>1a<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;then the affordance<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;is obvious and&nbsp;<em>neuron-facilitated synapse selection<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;produces&nbsp;<em>a familiar species expressa<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;through&nbsp;<em>a Darwinian process similar to selective breeding<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Selective breeding of synapses<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>corresponds to&nbsp;<em>rote learning<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;That is, competence without comprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the content-level&nbsp;<em>species impressa<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;does not occur in the normal context of&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and if&nbsp;<em>the potential of &#8216;something&#8217; happening<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;is not apparent, then affordance<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;is not obvious and&nbsp;<em>neuron-facilitated synapse selection<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;will not produce&nbsp;<em>a stable species expressa<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;unless&nbsp;<em>an affordance<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;becomes obvious or another process (besides sensible construction) is initiated at a level higher than the situation level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0056 I know&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;when Daisy encounters the neighbor&#8217;s cat on our morning walk.&nbsp;&nbsp;I worry that the cat&#8217;s fast moving paws may make mince-meat out of my dog&#8217;s precious snout.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, I pull on the leash, in order to avoid confrontation.&nbsp;&nbsp;That is my example of the selective-breeding of neural synapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, I wonder about other options.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Such wondering<\/em>&nbsp;introduces&nbsp;<em>an affordance that is not so obvious<\/em>.&nbsp;Consequently, I have the user-experience of a phantasm<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;that is odd and constantly in need of revision.&nbsp;&nbsp;Do I call this option, &#8220;incompetence without comprehension&#8221;?&nbsp;&nbsp;Or &#8220;temptation without a devil&#8221;?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0048 In science, metaphysics is not allowed.
