By Karl Menninger MD (1973) 8AC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the \u201csin of affluence\u201d, Menninger covered the \u201csins of waste, cheating and stealing, lying, and various cruelties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of all these, I would like to cover his \u201csin of lying\u201d, consisting of a single vivid example of deception.<\/p>\n<p>The sinking of the passenger ship Lusitania by German navy boats in May of 1915 was a tipping point.\u00a0 American sentiment turned in favor of joining the War in Europe (now known as World War 1).<\/p>\n<p>The Lusitania was carrying a cargo of munitions and a false manifest that claimed it carried no weapons of war.\u00a0 The United States Government withheld information about the false manifest from its citizens in order to arouse American anger against the Germans.\u00a0 President Woodrow Wilson wanted the USA to enter into the war to \u201csave democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In September 1917, the Wisconsin senator Robert La Follette announced that the Lusitania was carrying munitions at the time of the attack and the President knew about it.\u00a0 The Senate tried to expel him.\u00a0 However, their \u201ccries of treachery\u201d were only a screen hiding what they all knew: La Follette\u2019s claim was valid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following the \u201csin of affluence\u201d, Menninger covered the \u201csins of waste, cheating and stealing, lying, and various cruelties.\u201d Of all these, I would like to cover his \u201csin of lying\u201d, consisting of a single vivid example of deception.
