{"id":6758,"date":"2023-10-19T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=6758"},"modified":"2023-05-27T12:33:14","modified_gmt":"2023-05-27T12:33:14","slug":"looking-at-john-deelys-book-2010-semiotic-animal-part-8-of-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=6758","title":{"rendered":"Looking at John Deely&#8217;s Book (2010) &#8220;Semiotic Animal&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0(Part 8 of 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0058 The Latin scholastics faced great difficulties in regards to triadic relations, whether they recognized them or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Aristotle loves distinctions.&nbsp;&nbsp;And Plato loves to transcend distinctions.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the Latins, who retain Platonic traditions through&nbsp;<em>the loss of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christendom,<\/em>&nbsp;have some difficulties with Aristotle, who enters the scene through translations of Arabic texts, booty from the Crusades.&nbsp;&nbsp;Saint Thomas Aquinas brings&nbsp;<em>the Aristotelian aspect of Christian philosophy<\/em>&nbsp;up to speed in regards to reflecting on distinctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, it is not exactly obvious how to go from distinctions to triadic relations.&nbsp;&nbsp;It&#8217;s like the old adage of blind men observing an elephant.&nbsp;&nbsp;Their tactile-based reports describe different creatures.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, the elephant is a single creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0059 Here are two distinctions that crop up in Deely&#8217;s discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide24-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide24-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide24-3.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide24-3-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 24<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0060 The proximal fundament,&nbsp;<em>what we see<\/em>&nbsp;(hear, smell, taste or touch)&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;<em>what we think we see<\/em>&nbsp;has a contrast, the remote fundament,&nbsp;<em>the person who does the seeing and thinking<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ens reale<\/em>&nbsp;is mind-independent being.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Ens rationis<\/em>&nbsp;is mind-dependent being.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ens rationis is also called &#8220;a being of reason&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholastics start with these distinctions.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, it is not so obvious how they are going to elucidate a triadic relation, where a sign-vehicle (SV) stands for a sign-object (SO) in regards to a sign-interpretant (SI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0061 The following figure shows how each element of each distinction views the sign-relation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide25-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide25-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide25-3.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide25-3-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 25<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0062 Note how the sign-interpretant (SI) spans the gap between&nbsp;<em>ens reale<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>ens rationis<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The reason?&nbsp;&nbsp;The SI is&nbsp;<em>the ens reale that makes ens rationis possible<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0063 I could say that the two distinctions are &#8220;protosemiotic&#8221;, but that is only looking from the answer to the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surely, the intellectual journey from protosemiotic to semiotic is not obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The logics of contradiction and non-contradiction apply to secondness.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I hear the word, &#8220;reason&#8221;, I typically think of this type of logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0064 I suspect that the logics of contradiction and non-contradiction apply to&nbsp;<em>fundamenta proxima<\/em>&nbsp;and to&nbsp;<em>ens reale<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I am not so sure about&nbsp;<em>fundamenta remota<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>ens rationis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, calling humans &#8220;rational or reason-based animals&#8221; does not do the trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither does calling humans &#8220;irrational or superstitious animals&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0058 The Latin scholastics faced great difficulties in regards to triadic relations, whether they recognized them or not.
