(Part 7 of 18)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0080 This is the third blog in a series.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first blog, posted from May 15 through 18, 2023 at www.raziemah.com, performed a cursory examination of Brian Kemple&#8217;s Book (2019)&nbsp;<em>The Intersection of Semiotics and Phenomenology: Peirce and Heidegger in Dialogue<\/em>&nbsp;(Walter de Gruyter, Boston\/Berlin).&nbsp;&nbsp;The book is volume twenty in the&nbsp;<em>Semiotics, Communication and Cognition<\/em>&nbsp;series, edited by Paul Cobley and Kalevi Kull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second blog precedes this blog, depending on how one defines, &#8220;proceeds&#8221;, and covers appendix 1.1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At present, I have&nbsp;<em>appendix 1.2 of Kemple&#8217;s book<\/em>&nbsp;before me.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0081 Peirce&#8217;s vision of a complex sign-relation contains one sign-vehicle, two sign-objects and three sign-interpretants.&nbsp;&nbsp;Altogether, there are six elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide19-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide19-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide19-2.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide19-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 19<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0082 Kemple presents<em>&nbsp;five different possible configurations of semiosic structure.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;He calls this sequence, &#8220;the semiotic ladder&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here is a table of the five rungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide20-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide20-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide20-2.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide20-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 20<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly,&nbsp;<em>the semiotic ladder<\/em>&nbsp;offers&nbsp;<em>a variation of Peirce&#8217;s vision of the complex sign-relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0083 I ask, &#8220;How would I translate the semiotic ladder into category-based nested forms?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peirce&#8217;s formulation of a complex sign-relation starts with a single sign-vehicle.&nbsp;&nbsp;The immediate sign-vehicle triggers an immediate sign-object and immediate sign-interpretant.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, a dynamical sign-object and dynamical sign-interpretant follow.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, if the sign-vehicle repeats and the dynamical interpretant becomes a habit, that habit is a final interpretant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0084 In contrast,&nbsp;<em>a three-level interscope<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a category-based nested form composed of category-based nested forms<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each of three levels (content<sub>a<\/sub>, situation<sub>b<\/sub>&nbsp;and perspective<sub>c<\/sub>) contains a nested form with three elements (potential<sub>1<\/sub>, actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and normal context<sub>3<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;There are nine elements altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, is there a way to mesh&nbsp;<em>a paradigm with six elements<\/em>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<em>one with nine?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0085 Well, yes and no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, category-based nested formulations of signs are developed in several of Razie Mah&#8217;s e-works, including&nbsp;<em>Comments on John Deely&#8217;s Book (1994) New Beginnings<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Comments on Sasha Newell&#8217;s Article (2018) &#8220;The Affectiveness of Symbols&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, the formulations do not quite match Peirce&#8217;s paradigm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0086 Nevertheless, an attempt to explain Peirce&#8217;s paradigm in terms of the three-level interscope may prove insightful, even though it may not be fully satisfying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this I attend, using the example of a landslide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0080 This is the third blog in a series.&nbsp;
