{"id":6642,"date":"2023-09-28T09:47:39","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T09:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=6642"},"modified":"2023-05-27T09:51:57","modified_gmt":"2023-05-27T09:51:57","slug":"looking-at-appendix-1-1-in-brian-kemples-book-2019-the-intersection-part-2-of-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=6642","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Appendix 1.1 in Brian Kemple&#8217;s Book (2019) &#8220;The Intersection&#8221; (Part 2 of 18)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0033 So why are&nbsp;<em>presentative forms<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the grounding of transcendence<\/em>&nbsp;important?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that they govern&nbsp;<em>the ways in which the categories of firstness, secondness and thirdness appear<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The process is not straightforward.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, if one category associates with&nbsp;<em>what is expressed<\/em>&nbsp;and the adjacent higher category goes with&nbsp;<em>what is experienced<\/em>&nbsp;(with the caveat that thirdness in&nbsp;<em>what is presented<\/em>&nbsp;wraps around to firstness in&nbsp;<em>form<\/em>), then each presentative form expresses two categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh yeah, that makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0034 But, it does not make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kemple quotes from Peirce&#8217;s 1903 essay, &#8220;Sundry Logical Conceptions&#8221;, concerning&nbsp;<em>the modes of appearance for the categories of experience<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the following table, nine presentative forms are listed.&nbsp;&nbsp;Vertical columns correspond to&nbsp;<em>the category of experience for the presentative form<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The rows correspond to&nbsp;<em>expression according to category<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide02-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide02-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6643\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide02-2.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide02-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 02<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The columns denote&nbsp;<em>forms<\/em>&nbsp;and the rows denote&nbsp;<em>appearance&nbsp;<\/em>(presentation)<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0035 For example, consider&nbsp;<em>the form of firstness<\/em>&nbsp;(first column) and&nbsp;<em>the appearing category of secondness<\/em>&nbsp;(second row) corresponds to&nbsp;<em>an idea of secondness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here, I depict it as&nbsp;<em>&#8216;something&#8217;&nbsp;&nbsp;in the realm of actuality<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;An idea pertains to &#8216;something&#8217; actual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is another example from the above table.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The form of secondness<\/em>&nbsp;(second column) and&nbsp;<em>the appearing category of secondness<\/em>&nbsp;(second row) corresponds to&nbsp;<em>the fact of relations<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;To me, these relations are hylomorphic, consisting of two contiguous real elements, characterizing Peirce&#8217;s category of secondness.&nbsp;&nbsp;A thing is&nbsp;<em>a fact of (hylomorphic) relation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One more example will help.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The form of thirdness<\/em>&nbsp;(third column) and&nbsp;<em>the appearing category of secondness<\/em>&nbsp;(second row) corresponds to&nbsp;<em>signs of secondness<\/em>. Actions are signs of secondness.&nbsp;&nbsp;So are modes of conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0036&nbsp;<em>Each element in the above table<\/em>&nbsp;embodies&nbsp;<em>a form in one category<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>an appearance in another category<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, two categories are involved for each item in the table.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, the matrix is exhaustive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide03-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide03-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide03-2.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide03-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 03<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0037 What about the&nbsp;<em>idea that transcendence is grounded in crossing categories?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My head swims.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, it&#8217;s not Kemple&#8217;s fault.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is&nbsp;<em>the idea that the presentative form has a hylomorphic structure and that the element that corresponds to &#8220;matter&#8221; belongs to one category and the element that corresponds to &#8220;form&#8221; belongs to the adjacent higher category.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea is not apparent in Peirce&#8217;s table, pictured above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kemple continues&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0038 Going down the first column,&nbsp;<em>forms in firstness<\/em>&nbsp;may be labeled as &#8220;ideas&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;So<em>,<\/em>&nbsp;the element in the first row and the first column, is&nbsp;<em>an idea of possibility<\/em>&nbsp;(or,&nbsp;<em>&#8216;something&#8217; in the realm of possibility<\/em>).&nbsp;&nbsp;Likewise,<em>&nbsp;&#8216;something&#8217; in the realm of actuality<\/em>&nbsp;corresponds to&nbsp;<em>the idea of secondness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>&#8216;Something&#8217; in the realm of normal context<\/em>&nbsp;goes with&nbsp;<em>the idea of thirdness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going down the second column,&nbsp;<em>forms in secondness<\/em>&nbsp;may be labeled as &#8220;facts&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, qualia are&nbsp;<em>facts of firstness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Relations in the style of hylomorphes<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>facts of secondness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Signs and other triadic relations<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>facts of thirdness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going down the third column,&nbsp;<em>forms in thirdness<\/em>&nbsp;may be labeled as &#8220;signs&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Feelings,<\/em>&nbsp;such as&nbsp;<em>awareness of a thing of beauty,<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>signs of firstness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Actions,<\/em>&nbsp;such as&nbsp;<em>modes of conduct,<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>signs of secondness<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Thoughts<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>signs of thirdness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0039 Still, I have a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though each element in the above table references two categories.&nbsp;&nbsp;The rows and columns do not highlight&nbsp;<em>the hypothesis about transcendence developed in the previous blog,<\/em>&nbsp;where&nbsp;<em>the &#8220;matter&#8221; of a presentative form<\/em>&nbsp;belongs to&nbsp;<em>the adjacent lower category of its corresponding &#8220;form&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there&nbsp;<em>a ghost of a chance<\/em>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<em>Heidegger&#8217;s ground of transcendence<\/em>&nbsp;haunts&nbsp;<em>Perice&#8217;s table of presentative forms<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide04-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide04-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide04-2.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide04-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 04<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0040 Perhaps, I can conjure its specter by coloring&nbsp;<em>a sequence of presentative forms<\/em>, following the proposed hypothesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each transition, from idea to fact, from fact to sign, and from sign to idea, there is a corresponding transition from firstness to secondness, secondness to thirdness and thirdness to firstness.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is&nbsp;<em>a seqence of novel presentative forms<\/em>&nbsp;that are composed of&nbsp;<em>elements of the table<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The lower category presentative form for both appearance (row) and form (column) serves as &#8220;matter&#8221;&#8230;
