is a perspective-level actuality<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;(arising from the potential of reproductive success<sub>1c<\/sub>contextualizing an instance, ranging from&nbsp;<em>social interaction [stimulates] hormonal response<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>culture [informs] brain<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here, the &#8220;adaptation&#8221; includes&nbsp;<em>the ways<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<em>mother-infant interaction [stimulates] hormones<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;increases&nbsp;<em>reproductive success<sub>1c<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, a &#8220;phenotype&#8221; is emotional attachment<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;virtually emerging from (and situating) an innate<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;function<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0044 Consequently, the terms, &#8220;adaptation&#8221; and &#8220;phenotype&#8221; are no longer independent actualities, as noted in the previous blog.&nbsp;&nbsp;Instead, they are labels for two category-crossing pairs, one for actuality and one for potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide20.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide20.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide20-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 20<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For &#8220;adaptation&#8221;, sociality<sub>3b<\/sub>, reproductive success<sub>1c<\/sub>&nbsp;and natural selection<sub>3c<\/sub>&nbsp;are bound.&nbsp;&nbsp;The perspective-level actuality<sub>2c<\/sub>arises from reproductive success<sub>1c<\/sub>, a necessary, but not sufficient cause.&nbsp;&nbsp;The situation-level actuality<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is a hylomorphe, ranging from&nbsp;<em>social interactions [stimulate] hormones<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>culture [informs] brains<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For &#8220;phenotype&#8221;, body development<sub>3a<\/sub>, genes<sub>2a<\/sub>, function versus plasticity<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;and &#8216;something&#8217; social<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;are bound.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8216;Something&#8217; social<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;can support social interactions<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;or culture<sub>2b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The brain and body<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;will innately display either functionality or plasticity or some combination of the two<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0046 Here is the picture for mother-infant bonding, which displays function as the content-level potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide21.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide21.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide21-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 21<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0047 Chapter two discusses&nbsp;<em>the last common ancestor between humans and chimpanzees<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newson and Richerson discuss some ways that social interactions may grade into (what scientists might call) culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0048 The first concerns&nbsp;<em>vocalizations<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yes, vocalizations may be social interactions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Or, they may be the product of social interactions.&nbsp;&nbsp;A great ape may want to engage in some interactions and avoid other interactions.&nbsp;&nbsp;These intentions are physically on display when an ape takes the initiative to do something.&nbsp;&nbsp;Something may include vocalizations, but action is everything.&nbsp;&nbsp;Actions are&nbsp;<em>signs of intention<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newson and Richerson mention vocalizations because (somehow) these creatures have to end up speaking, like we do today.&nbsp;&nbsp;They cannot imagine an alternate pathway, such as the one described in Razie Mah&#8217;s e-masterworks,&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>An Archaeology of the Fall,<\/em>&nbsp;along with commentaries grouped in the series,&nbsp;<em>Buttressing the Human Niche<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Reverberations of the Fall<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0049 The second is&nbsp;<em>group living<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;In group living, social interactions abound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0050 The third consists in&nbsp;<em>compromises that accompany group living:<\/em>&nbsp;hierarchy and alliances<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0051 The fourth is&nbsp;<em>grooming,<\/em>&nbsp;which sustains alliances and fits well into the hormone-release concept of social interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide22.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide22.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Slide22-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 22<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0052 Here, genes<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;grant&nbsp;<em>an established hormone-triggering system<\/em>&nbsp;a degree of plasticity<sub>1a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hormones<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;are relaxing and promote emotional alliances<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0053 The fifth is&nbsp;<em>culture,<\/em>&nbsp;which consists in non-genetic inheritance, typically passed from mother to offspring.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here, culture includes&nbsp;<em>how to interact while grooming,<\/em>&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;<em>how to look for and acquire food<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The habits satisfy needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the same time,&nbsp;<em>habits [of satisfying] needs<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;reflect the essence of the hylomorphe,&nbsp;<em>culture [informs] brains<sub>2b<\/sub>.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;adaptation&#8221; concerns&nbsp;<em>paying attention to what others are doing<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;when others are engaged in&nbsp;<em>habitual activities [that satisfy] needs<\/em>&nbsp;(such as finding food)<sub>2b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The &#8220;phenotype&#8221;
